"Leading Edge" 3D printed knife guided sharpening system. Assembly/Build/Use

It's worth building for sure and it will do a perfect job as a great sharpening system for you. The one I have left available for free on tinkercad, is my old version (the same version CelloDan CelloDan posted about here. It works well on a MK3S, printed in PLA with 4 top & bottom layers, 3 perimeters and 25% rectilinear infill.

Seeing that you already have a great printer and know what you're doing with 3D printing, I would definitely say make one for yourself! Post about it here when you're done or have questions.

FYI, Gritomatic will soon be selling my (much improved) new version, with a lot of upgrades and refinements. The new version won't be available for free. That said, the old version will work perfectly fine and does a great job.

As far as stones are concerned, the AliExpress cheap diamond plated 1x6 inch stones are perfect. Just make sure to lubricate them with weak soapy water when sharpening (a few drops of dish soap mixed with water in a squirt water bottle does the job).
Is there any specific PLA you would recommend?

I also just realized you recommend a 0.40mm nozzle. I've been printing with 0.60mm for so long I'll need to find my original nozzle.

I get great results with Overture PLA, Space Gray and Black are my two favorites for printing quality and color.

Yes, it's most accurate and my tolerances are designed to work best with a 0.4 nozzle. Preferably 0.2mm layer height for most parts. The ball itself from the ball bearing assembly is best printed with a 0.1mm layer height.

Don't use PETG, it ends up screwing with the accuracy of the parts and they don't fit well together.

CelloDan CelloDan 777 Edge 777 Edge Is this system still worth printing and building. I'm new to sharpening and wondering if it's worth it to build . I'm very experienced with 3D printing so it should be easy with my MK3S. Would I be better off spending the $$$ on a Work Sharp Precision and printing some of the upgrades for that? I was planning on buying some of the cheaper Aliexpress diamond stones to start out with for either sharpener to save money.
I enjoy using mine and have sharpened many of my traditional slipjoints and a few fixed blades with it 👍

I am not planning on buying any of the commercial versions as this system got me covered for my sharpening needs.

I do wish I had a 3D printer though 😎 as I had to depend on my public library and a commercial 3D printing service.

Since you’re experienced at 3D printing I see no reason for you to buy one.

There is a bit of a learning curve in its initial assembly, especially with the the brass inserts however you would be able to very quickly print another part if needed.

If it were up to me; yesterday.😜 But it's up to Gritomatic. They have a few new products lined up for release and they decide on the release dates.

Hello 777 Edge,

I'm a new forum member here and I wanted to personally thank you for your incredibly awesome contributions to this forum and to the hobby in general. I really enjoy reading your post and have gained a lot of insight with respect to guided system knife sharpening from your shared knowledge.

Based on your comments throughout this forum pertaining to recommend sharpening systems I have ordered a Hapstone R2 system and will receive it next week. I can't wait to start enjoying the R2 and using it to get my EDC and kitchen knives in great shape!

If you don't mind, I have a clamp specific question. In many of your post pertaining to the Hapstone R2 system, in addition to the standard R2 clamps you also speak quite favorably of the Hapstone "Lite" clamps, however, from what I read it appears these clamps have now been discontinued.

In the design details of your Leading Edge sharpener, you also mention utilization of these same clamps. I see that you shared some CNC .step files for the purpose of having metal clamps machined.

My question is there one of those CNC clamp files which is similar to the "Lite" clamp that I can have CNC machined for use as an alternative clamp solution for the Hapstone R2?

Thank you in advance for your reply!

Welcome to Blade Forums!

The CNC files I created, was for a metal version of my experimental 3D printed plastic clamps, not for the R2 Lite clamps. The 3D printed plastic clamps work, but they would be better in metal.

I spoke with Gritomatic about the Lite clamps recently, and they said that they could possibly have Hapstone bring them back if there is enough demand for them. The only way demand can be shown, is if people contact Gritomatic about getting them back in stock.

Hapstone seems to have decided on replacing the regular Lite clamps with the smaller version of the angled Opti clamps, like the ones they now supply with the Hapstone RS system. That said, I think they will be open to the idea of bringing back the regular Lite clamps, but they would need some convincing.

The smaller Opti clamps work, but they are susceptible to bending and warping if they need to be tightened a lot. Personally, I still prefer the regular old version of the Lite clamps.

Thank you 777 Edge, I'll reach out to Gritomatic and express my interest in obtaining some of the former Hapstone Lite clamps, hopefully others will do the same.

Maybe the best approach would be to start a new post with a "sign up" list of those Hapstone sharpening system owner's who would be interested in purchasing a set of Lite clamps, is there a formal way to do this?

Good idea! Then we can add Hapstone to the thread so they can see the interest.

Do you think it best that either you or I start a new post pertaining to the Hapstone Lite clamps or do you think a forum poll would be a better approach? If the latter, does it require forum admin to set up a poll?

As far as I know anyone can set one up, go ahead and let's get Hapstone notified after you've set it up.

As a new non-paying member it does not appear that I have the authorization to set up a poll as I don't see anywhere in my settings and controls to set up this poll, looks like all I can do is make limited post and reply to messages.

What specific forum subgroup do you recommend that we set up this poll or post?

Yes, a photo of the Lite clamps and an understanding of why they are superior to the existing Opti clamps would be helpful as I've never seen the Lite clamps, I've just read all your recommendations about them.
