"Leading Edge" 3D printed knife guided sharpening system. Assembly/Build/Use

Nicely done CelloDan! That looks like an epic mirror edge, probably hair whittling sharp!

Thank you 777 Edge 777 Edge :) , I am very happy with the results and I am enjoying learning about sharpening  Thanks for your generous help and advice :)

Now, remember that poor beat up chisel that I rescued from my shop ?

Maybe not hair whittling but not too bad either ... if you ask my arm 🤓

Jeepers creepers, that'll work. Was this one also finished on your Leading Edge sharpening system?

Howdy folks :)

It's been a while since I updated this thread however I am happy today to show you what I've been up to this evening .

I got to play with my Leading Edge sharpening system and try out for the first time a couple of aluminum clamps .

They are the very affordable KakBritva clamps by Gritomatic

They come in a variety of offerings to fit probably every knife out there. Gritomatic also offers adapters to connect them to popular sharpeners on the market.

I got two "side" clamps with a gap of 4 mm for my Leading Edge system. You would need to print the adapter bar in order to mount the clamps.
(perhaps the 6 mm wide would be a better all around size ? ... I am not sure )

Initially I was a bit puzzled as to how to use them on my small traditional knives. The clamps would press/hold only onto the spine of the blade and the hold was not adequate at all

My big kitchen knife on the other hand seem to be a perfect fit

I reached out to the Leading Edge system designer 777 Edge 777 Edge and got some very useful tips on how to improve the hold in my small knives.

Basically the idea is to use the flat area of the tang for one clamp while the second one clamps towards the tip of the blade and at the spine to prevent flex and rotation.

Voila :), problem solved :thumbsup::)

For pen blades only one clamp in the center did it ( you can really apply a lot of pressure on this aluminum clamps so even though the holding area is small it is enough )

I was very happy to see that this clamps allow for very low angles even on small blades

BIG KNIFE :)

So I decided to sharpen my little Buck 55.
I used only on clamp for this knife. The little Buck has a flat area at the spine which facilitated this.

I used my DIY glass on aluminum blanks with 3m PSA lapping films and went for 15 degrees per side bevel.

For stropping I got to try for the first time my diy strops with Gritomatic diamond pastes.

WOW, you have come along way mate. Well done.

Today I'm using one of my Leading Edge sharpeners paired up with a set of TSPROF Blitz clamps in my rotating clamp adapter.

Re-profiling my new Civivi "Appalachian Drifter 2" to 15dps. Venev Ursa diamond stones making quick and light work of the hollow ground S35VN blade.

I'm loving the Blitz clamps and I am really liking this little Civivi.

For all of you who have Lansky sharpening stones, I designed and added some Lansky stone holders for my Leading Edge sharpening system.

Today I sharpened my 2021 BF knife.
I am very happy with the results  :)

I stropped the edge this time with my home made, paint sticks wood on aluminum backing and Gritomatic diamond compounds.
Noticed how the steel residue quickly stained the wood.

All done :)

Wow, awesome CelloDan CelloDan ! I'm glad you're giving my Leading Edge sharpening system a good workout.

Wow! Very nice and thank you very much for engineering the cad design 777 Edge. I stumbled over this as I have the EdgePro Apex and was thinking of buying the scissor attachment but cost I felt was a bit excessive for what it is, so I wondered if there might be an STL and found not only upgrades for the Apex but this entire sharpening system. Wonderful contribution ...Thanks again!!!

My pleasure. If you make one for yourself please post about it and feel free to ask any questions you may have.

BTW, I'm working on updates and when I'm done designing it, I will upload a second version of my system with slots for M4 nuts and magnets to slip in and make it much quicker and easier to assemble.

I will! Havta admit intrigue with printing the complete system, especially with notice of a forthcoming upgraded version. Right now, just looking at your Apex upgrades but am highly interested with printing the complete system. Looks fantastic!

Hello,
I am Rémi from France.
thank you very much for the Leading Edge 777 Edge 777 Edge :)
I printed it and everything is fine but I modified a few parts :
- Custom ball joints
- 10*2mm magnets
- inlaid magnets in F_-_Stone_Holders_Platform for inclinometer.
if you are interested, I posted a remix ( in french ) with the modified parts on Thingiverse
I ordered the ruixin stones and a 'strop' with Puma polishing paste. I look forward to test
thank you for everything

Hi Rémi,

Glad to see you've customized my system even more for your own preference. Nicely done!

If you order Ruixin stones, make sure you do not order the plain basic Ruixin stones...they are really bad stones and not worth using at all. Make sure you order the diamond plated stones - they are much better.

Hope you enjoy using my system!

777 Edge 777 Edge , if I may ask, are there any plans to adapt this for the Gatco system?
I don't have a Gatco system to take measurements from and come up with a design. Looking at photos, it seems that the stones have fixed rods installed permanently in them? If this is the case, then the rod could be an obstruction for stone clamps. I may be able to come up with a plan for them regardless, but I don't have one to work on.

If I could get very exact measurements and drawings with all the exact dimensions, I should be able to use them to design something.

The rods are not permanently installed. I just pulled one out of one of my stones to confirm. I can try to take some measurements, but I’d need to know what you need, and how precise.
