Lets talk GEC!

I did not find the 29s sheepsfoot to be a very good carver out of the tube. I am going to reprofile it as soon as I get a minute.

I’m not surprised by this- most grinds on most knives with average blade thickness don’t have a really good grind for making thin wood shavings. As a general practice all my knives get a reprofiling. Even Flexcut knives feature a small unnecessary bevel that I grind flat.

I would think a block plane would yield better and more consistent results for breaking edges. In the shop I only use knives for layout work, and then marking knives at that.
That’s right, it would. This particular occasion didn’t really require consistency and I was looking for convenience. I also didn’t want to take it apart again after my trial fit since the joints went together so well.

Besides... my bench plane is in desperate need of setup after I sharpened it, and I didn’t want to go through that mess.

I like the “whittled” look it has with hand chamfered corners and edges and the satisfaction of having done it with my #93.

I couldnt resist this little gem.

Looks like they’ve officially updated the “what’s in production” to include the #92! Now they have pictures up of nail nick’ed spears. Looks like they moved the nick forward a little when compared with the blades shown in Sabercat’s picture. I wonder if that is to help address the nail accessibility issue some people had? I’ve been reading that people resolved that issue by grinding the coping blade angle to be similar to a sheepsfoot round.

my knife box is complete! I can fit 12 knives in a 9"x9" box. This is a vast improvement from lining them all up on my dresser. There are still at least an equal number of knives that still need a home, but this is a good start. One day this will likely be a dedicated GEC box, but for now some of my favorite Cases and one Queen make their way in. I finished it with a bees wax / mineral oil combo to keep the moisture at bay. For people who are sentimental, the 1995 Case Serpentine congress was one of my Dad's.

I found your dad’s knife. That’s a really nice display...time to start a second layer!

It turned out great. Nice work.:thumbsup:

I’ve gotten one regular release GEC knife this year so far. I have currently have four on reserve and at least one more that I’ll get for sure, but it will probably be more depending on the covers that the 86 is in, this is going to be a painful few months.

We need a nice stretch where the only knives released are French Kates in gold glitter acrylic :D

That would be so outrageous I would buy it in a heartbeat. But that’s basically what the first half of the year was for me, everything was either too big or too small or too swayback, the second half is all Goldilocks.
This brings up a question I’ve had for a couple months. I saw a description of a non-GEC “leg knife” or whatever they called it and it said it could be used as a cap lifter, I looked and there seemed to be a small lip on the heal that could catch the inside of a bottle cap. Does anyone know if the regular French Kate has this or can be used as a cap lifter?

I'd read somewhere that style of knife was intended to be used as a bottle opener. I’d also read somewhere that the French Kate was GEC’s biggest disappointment, and apparently not suited to de-crown bottles.

That’s sort of what I thought but have never seen a picture at quite the right angle to be sure, I wonder if a little file work could remedy that, I brought and old rounded cap lifter on a Dwight Devine back to life with a small round file.

Quite normal, the association of "French" and "bottle" is totally unappropriated! LOL
ps and I know a bit about that!:p:p:p
