Lets talk GEC!

I don't have any safe queens per se, but I do carry a few knives more than the others. I'd say right now my 2 most carried are my Ebony WCLF and my Blackwood 77 Barlow. The Jigged WCLF, Viper, and Black Jack don't get out quite so much - although I did carry the Black Jack today.

I'll play.

My most used GEC's versus their "safe queen" counterparts. For the record, I don't keep my knives in a safe or in tubes. I have a lovely display case/chest that I keep my collection in - a gift from my wife from a few years back.

Ah! More stunners. A user lambsfoot is a sight for sore eyes! I love the saw-cut TC user- that blade combo is the greatest in my humble opinion. Thanks for sharing!

Another 93 Waynorth Lambsfoot as a user!! Awesome. Love to see that sweet patina. The Blackwood #77 is absolutely a classy looking knife. Gorgeous knives, carried or not! Boy I can’t believe got big that shield is on that black jack.

I don’t have a safe and I keep all my GECs and a couple S&Ms together and accessible. Although all are equally accessible, I don’t use them all...so instead of safe queens, they are more like beauty queens. Here is my most used GEC and one that is never used except for photos...it would also be that last knife of mine that I would use (notice anything different about it?). l love my Beer Scouts:upload_2020-7-9_16-55-36.jpeg

One of the many things I enjoy about GEC knives is the excellent variety of classic shields. There are ones that I favor over others, of course, but there are very few that I straight up dislike. I am not overly fond of the banana, boot, old man, etc. and I also am not a big fan of raised shields like the Cripple Creek Buffalo (mostly because they are less apt to pin them and they are too much like the shields that are found on cheaper knives).

My only gripe with the so-called hotdog shield is that I have found it to be overly used. I think it suits micarta and other less exciting cover materials but it is always a missed opportunity when it is applied to woods like Ebony, smooth bone, and the like where something more interesting like the Federal, Badge, or Banner shield would be better served.

I can't imagine GEC ever topping the Waynorth Lambsfoot knives but I hope I'm around if they do with some money in my pocket!

I came to the party too late for the Beer Scouts but they sure look great. Always enjoy seeing yours!

I also love your beer scouts! They made one with a spear? To me they’re the most useful parts of a SAK and 10x more beautiful! Thanks for sharing.

...as noted above, all my GECs are equally accessible. Top drawer are all Beer Scouts and Mr. CC SFOs...and one of Mike’s SFOs as well. Bottom drawer, mostly 15s, a 48, a 73, a 77, a 86 (many being SFOs plus a couple Beerlow mods) ... and a couple S&Ms too (including an HJ-1...one of my favorites). No acrylic, micarta, or wood. upload_2020-7-9_17-16-47.jpeg

I love to see what makes a knife a user vs. a “beauty queen” (that’s a better word for it, thanks Mark). You guys have some real pretty knives, used or not. I also love to see the specimens I’ll never own! If I ever won the lottery, there’d be a certain percentage I’d just give to Bill Howard as a thank you for these really cool tools.

Why not? It's just a knife, though admittedly a very nice one.

how about a “GEC Collector User Knife Challenge”? Here’s the rules:

1) open to anyone with at least 1 “safe queen“
2) post a picture of your favorite safe queen right along side your most used GEC.

Safe queen here means any knife you actually hide from view: special box, original tube, vault, etc. unfortunately no rewards except bragging rights, but I think that goes a long way with this group.

This is my most worn GEC next to the one I haven't gotten around to using yet.

You do have a bunch of some pretty nice knives there my friend .

If GEC is planning on limiting the amount of variation on runs going forward (i.e. only one or two covers options for any given knife) as some have speculated, I sure hope they do a run of 500 or 1000 knives in Glitter Gold Acrylic. Guaranteed to sell like hotcakes! :D

Aww shucks I cant play... :( all of mine are users...

At least in my eyes, being a user is the highest honor a knife can have.
I got started thinking about this because surely our most hardcore collectors must have at least one GEC user!

This is my most worn GEC next to the one I haven't gotten around to using yet.

I like to see those ancient-looking lambsfoot’s with some more ancient-looking patina . I mention them as users because even I don’t know if I could put one to use, and I love to use knives.

I love those Utilitarian clip blades- I think the one on the right is a 73? Either way, solid choices, beautiful covers.

I have way more GEC Safe Queens than I have GEC Users .

I’m a huge fan of those Ramsfoot #93’s. Seems like you are, too! What an awesome collection you have.

As great a collection as any, always love your posts!
Thanks, you know its funny a couple years ago GEC actually seemed outta reach for me. At that time money was pretty tight, which it still is to a degree. I was gifted the Bullnose and 44 by generous porch members and that sure whetted my appetite! I got a good deal on the 97 on the exchange, same for the Calfpen and the Oilfield jack. The forum knife and the Bullbuster are the only ones I've bought directly from a dealer. Turns out they're not that far out of reach after all, and aside from the inflated aftermarket prices for certain patterns, worth every penny imho. I plan to continue to buy GEC when I can, and hope that they stay in business for a long long time.

Thanks for the kind words my friend . I do not build up much Patina on my Users . I prefer a cleaner blade . I do indeed like the 93s very much because I really like the Sheepfoot and Lambfoot style blades . This is all my 93 Sheepfoot . The Bottom one is the User . The other 2 have not been carried .

My 2 Lambfoot knives : I do not count as 93s even though they are on the 93 frame .
