Lets talk GEC!

I'm drawn to those pocket carvers. I just wish I could carve!

You can, though! I believe in you.

In response to a lot of this "I like the pocket carvers, but I can't whittle" I'm putting together a list with pictures of things people could whittle that are fun, relatively straight forward and is more than just a pointed stick.

See, smoking does stunt your growth. Great talent. Love your work.

I think he could have been taller, but he was cut down in his prime. :D

While they are designed and marked as "pocket carvers" you can use these little blades for anything that you'd use an x-acto blade for.

I feel like they should implement some rule on the exchange where you can only claim 1 knife at a time. Then have to wait an hour or so to put in a claim on another.

That would be hard to police. I think it's fine the way it is. But it is frustrating when you arrive to a sales thread with no photos at all and they are all already sold in the first two minutes. Pretty crazy.

Yeah, that's my internal debate. Nothing illegal about it, and if it works, it works. I just hate it because I think GEC, or at the very least the distributors, deserve the money, if there's money to be made. At the very least perhaps we can agree flipping is a tacky.

I have to agree. However, It's a difficult situation and hard to find a fair resolution for both the seller and the buyer.

I agree its tacky. I can understand an inflated price if its a knife that hasn't been on production for a while and there aren't that many around. I've paid more than I should have for a couple (three? ok, maybe four) knives, but I can't understand people who would pay a grossly inflated price the next day after they've sold out o_O

Or in the case of GEC, I see inflated prices on knives that are still available from dealers. That I truly don't understand

I abhor greed. But what I dislike even more is the idea that we need more rules. Ugh...there is already too much of that sentiment in our every day lives. To bring that practice into what essentially amounts to a hobby?:rolleyes:

The 33 is going to feature a new shield, right? Or have they used something like it before? Trying to decide if I should get a 33 or wait for the rumored 35 release.

Kifer's are announced! Boy... the #23 is too much knife for my pocket, but it sure displays covers well. Those Kifer SFO's are gorgeous. I also thought the Beaver tails were well done; the jigging looked like a beaver had been gnawing at the wood.

It took them a lot longer with the Mammoth Northwoods than I thought it would. ;):D

yeah.... Jiki is my hero. There are a few on here that are excellent carvers... I'm piddling around with it.... and have the scars to prove it...:D
I have never tried to carve anything. I can't draw a simple picture to save my life!
I have always believed people that can carve or sculpt must also be very good artists. Must the two necessarily go together? I believe yes.

I can't draw worth a darn, but I do feel like I'm a decent whittler. I think the "subtractive" nature of carving just works better for some folks.

Exactly right... it's not a reason to change your mind about a knife.
If GEC made an announcement that they won't do any more Bail and Chains,
those other (Tidioute) knives will fly off the shelves too. But I won't be joining them.
While I do agree with this, I’m sure there are some on the fence about some of these knives. Or even some who plain don’t know where to find them. While my traditional collection is still pretty green, I’ve been at it for a couple years now and am still finding dealers with knives that I like on the shelf. An 82 and 81 moose are good examples I’ve found in the last several months. Additionally, I bought one of those Yankee Whittlers because it was clear they would sell out and I didn’t want to mess with finding and paying secondary pricing if I ever decided to pursue. I guess that’s just another way of saying I was on the fence and got a little push. ;) Even though it’s not particularly in line with anything I’m collecting at this moment.

I've seen some guys take the chain off and fill the hole with a decorative mosaic pin. Ends up looking pretty cool.
That’s a fantastic idea, I would love to see some of these mods if anyone has and is willing to share!

Interestingly enough - I actually carry a 15 with bail and chain every day. Every day that I wear pants that is.

I very rarely use it and I carry it for much the same reason as I carry a handful of quarters and $1 coins. In the very rare instance that I forget a pocket knife (it's been known to happen ), I always have this 15 with its bail and chain - it's as routine as putting on a belt.

I got one of the regular Tidioutes and recently got one of the M&Gs (which will replace the Tidioute for regular carry). I am bummed I couldn't land one of Charlie's (I really liked that bar shield and clip blade) but such is life.

That's an amazingly consistent chain.... very impressive. My first "successful" chain still looked pretty poor... I only did 3 links, and they were just about anything but consistent.

you guys give me something to aspire to... I haven't been doing any whittling lately... other things have taken precedence. I need to get back into it...
