Progress Thread - The Redmeadow Bowies

The front spacers are that cabernet red paperstone Tim, just the back spacer will be black richlite.

Oh ok. I thought that looked red. That is looking really nice.

I'll get everything except the end plate attached with epoxy and let that cure. That makes sure that I can get all the spacers lined up without gaps so when I do get to peening the tang over the end plate, everything is already cured up and correct. Finding an error in the spacers after peening the tang sucks!

After heat treat, I annealed the crap out of the end of the tang so it will move under the hammer. The peening is done with a tiny ball pein and a couple of punches with rounded heads to prevent digging things up to much.

The A/I Bowie is gonna have a polished end plate so I have to be careful with my taps. The bronze one is going to be textured so I don't have to worry about marring the surface when tapping with the hammer and punches.

Th'anks! When I asked Scott Maynard, RMK Shop foreman (the other RMK Shop foreman) the same question some many years ago, he told me they soldered a screw to the metal sheet stock, drilled a hole in the handle material, added some epoxy, then screwed it in place; shaping it after the fact. That wouldn't work with a full, or through-tang knife like yours. Thanks for the esplainin' stuff.

I posed the question elsewhere here, but would that rear spacer look better in maroon (like the front ones), or should I leave it black? Haste makes waste, and I want to get this blade right.

Maroon for symmetry, black to show your OCD who's boss! (Maroon)...

Haha! I have to force myself to break up patterns and symmetry, that's why I'm terrible at spacer layout. I was thinking the black might bring out the front spacers more, but I'm planning on a black sheath so it should pop no matter what. I'll get some mock ups made of both.

The maroons have it....except for the sheath! I'll get a new spacer attached and peened up, I should have some good shop time this coming week. Can't wait to shape these up. For my first S guards, I think they're gonna turn out nice.
