Ive had to unsubscribe from threads and then re-do it. After you unsubscribe, be sure to log out, then log back in so that the cookies and things associated with your account reset first.

Getting alerts that someone "reacted" to a post is a bit disconcerting. As far as getting new posts alerts, I used to only be subscribed to the WTB/S/T thread but because of the constant incessant chatting causing false alarms, I decided to bail several months ago. Jsega51 seems to be correct though, best to reset all your preferences if you don't wish to be missing out.
