Here's the finalized design

Specs:

Overall length = 16 inches












Blade
  • 9 inches (sharpened), 10 inches to the front of the handle
  • A2 steel, hardened to 59 HRc
  • 1/4" thick
  • 2.25" tall at the belly
  • Flats will be "as-forged" finish
  • "K" logo will be etched
Handle
  • 6 inches (from front of the handle to the pommel)
  • 5.5 inches of actual handle material
  • 1/4" thick material (0.75" total)
  • Options would be Natural, Green or Black canvas micarta
  • 2 lanyards/tie downs (front safety lanyard = 1/4", rear handle lanyard = 3/8")
  • 2 Corby pins (mechanical fasteners)
  • Handle is large enough to fit an extra large hand "just right". The rest of us "non-apes" :D will have some wiggle room - helpful in chopping.
POB (Point of Balance) is "in the ring"

Ring is 1 inch diameter and will be chamfered inside/out. :thumbup:

Sheath?

I do not have a sheath in mind just yet. I've got a design, but I need to run it by a few people to see feasibility....as I get closer to having it done...I'll be sure to post the details here. Trust me, it'll be cool. :D

Standard price on this one will be around $300 as a custom knife. So, how can I sell it for less? Glad you asked. :D












If I have to make 'em one-at-a-time:
  • heat-treat cost will be $55 instead of $6 (shipping to-n-fro to Paul Bos, plus I don't meet the minimum - only one blade)
  • Waterjet cutting is ~$10 per blade versus $50 of labor.
  • Blade grinding (out of house) will be $20 per blade instead of $40 worth of labor.
Make sense?

how long to we have to wait for you to dummy one up for pics like you did with the bushcraft? not that I'm excited or anything.
 
great question, din. I have a prototype coming from the waterjet guy - but in mild steel. It actually will be a dummy...:D

I'll put handles on it for comparison sake...but it will definitely NOT be for sale. :foot:

This baby is illegal because the handle can be used as a brass knuckle. So to hit and damage.

On Dan's Survivor (or K-Boar or Dankura or WSK), the hole is for a gripping purpose.

Canadian law says:
"Brass Knuckles" and any similar device consisting of a band of metal with finger holes designed to fit over the root knuckles of the hand.

Keyword here is device. The device is designed to hit. The one ring here is for grip.

So as there is only one hole and it's purpose is not to hit. These models are perfectly legal in Canada :D

just a little nudge up the list...know you've been busy as hell, dan, but I'm curious if any more inroads have been made, as well as thoughts on sheath design.
