The Anvil Shed, The spot to shoot the breeze.

Just got back from visiting my parents. Water and power are on. I can't begin to describe the amount of devastation. Almost every guardrail, power pole, mountain, signs etc etc etc. Visibility was real bad. Pics don't show much. All family is good.

Glad to hear your family is okay.

Some ja shellydino put an auto trans into it for him so his wife could drive it...it came back making a knocking noise--well we cant figure out what it is so we have to pull the tranny--noise is coming from that area---pulled the starter and there is metal shavings inside the bellhousing---he put a rusty old used flex plate on it---my thoughts are the flex plate is cracked around where it bolts to the crankshaft---dont know yet---the guy used mixed matched bolts---stripped a hole where the starter bolts on so he put a nut on the backside----bolts not even tightened up all the way ---just a hacked butcher job all the way around---i dont do that---i am overly picky about how i do things---i would never deliver something of that poor quality workmanship....thats why joe asked me to work on it....yep it looks great on the outside.....
oh and a brake slave is leaking and the guy never even told him about it....nice eh!!! so brakes it is also...
Hopefully that crazy conversion didn't take out a crank bearing. I had a '72 Mach I that needed a full rebuild due to bad bearing. Oh my, do I ever wish I could have that car back.

Very relieved to hear that your parents are ok but also very heartbroken for all those who are not.

I went to visit one of my good friends in northern Wisconsin last week for some fly fishing for panfish. While hauling the canoe to the lake we stumbled across some Chanterelle and Black Trumpet Mushrooms. Dinner that night was outstanding!!

1st ride with two of my boys. 2nd oldest on left just picked up a new suzuki 650. Had a great time. Visited this spot a month or so ago with my oldest. Im glad to have this time with them. Now if my youngest had one it would be just about perfect.

@GPyro Here are a couple pictures of the canoe finished. I haven't weighed it yet. I'll do that in a few days after the finish has thoroughly dried.

O Old Biker .
Very impressive!!!
.....things look uniform and even. I like those rails and your decks look good!
It looks sweet with those seats.
Is that your first, or have you assisted in others?
Is carpentry your trade or just your talent?
Do you know about how many hours you have into it?

I have had some limited exposure to antique wood boats. They are a lot of work....... and worth every minute of it! They are so pretty.
(providing there was a thorough survey done prior to purchase:rolleyes:)

There's an antique boat show every summer and it draws a bunch of handmade wood boats..... talking with those folks and the seeing pride in their work is always fun.
......I love those old Packard marine engines in those beautiful wood boats.

Thanks for the follow up.
Please be sure to let us know how the maiden voyage goes. :)

Biker, impressive work!
Have you taken her out to get some water? Heck, with a canoe like that you may forget to fish. DM

I started my working life as a 16 year old kid in a furniture factory , stacking boards by length, off of a conveyor belt. 16 years later, when the company folded, I was a foreman. Then I did HVAC for about a decade, now for the last 17 years I have been making shipping crates for kit airplanes. So I don't know that I would call myself a carpenter. But I have cut a few boards in my life, shot millions of staples, and hammered the occasional nail. And yes, before you ask, I still have all of, all ten of my fingers.:)

I built a twenty footer a little over twenty years ago. A friend came up to me one day and said, I was in X store (I don't remember which store.) the other day, and I saw a book on building a strip canoe. I said did you buy it. He said no. So I went and bought it. We both ended up building a canoe, mine a 20 footer his 16. The problem is I'm single, and a 20 foot canoe is a chore to handle singlehanded, both on and off the water. And the older I've gotten, the harder it gets. So I built the 14 foot canoe. I didn't make my 40 pound goal though. It came in a bit heavy. Still a lot easier to handle than my big one.

I took it out for a short paddle on the Tualatin river Thursday after work. Saw some ducks. Put a few scratches on the bottom, seeing how far up a side creek I could go. I didn't have a lot of time but it was a good trip.

How's this for an attic find?

Back in 2005 I purchased my grandparents' home because my grandmother was ill and needed to move into a care facility. The proceeds from the sale covered her living expenses until she passed the next year.
Fast forward to 2020 and I'm preparing the house to sell and what do I find hidden away in the attic? This original Hurd Super Caster complete with the original line.
I do remember my grandfather showing it to me with pride as he had won it in a local fishing derby back in the late 40's or early 50's. I don't think he even tried it out on the water.
We're thinking that he hid it during his final months as Alzheimer's took it's toll. I had looked for this when we were cleaning up but when it didn't appear with the rest of his fishing gear I assumed that a cousin had taken it with the rest of the tackle.
I included the 192 in the pic because it would easily have been his favorite knife had he still been around when I joined this Buck family.

I have always admired the old metal reels..So beautiful compared to the plastic stuff today. As a kid I loved to take them apart to 'clean up" and polish but somehow always ended up with a extra part or two..

Almost done bringing this 20 yr old bike back to life. Fork revalving and seals and it will be done. I purchased this fall from an ad on Craigslist. Honda made this hot rod for 7 years or so. 2000 to 2007. Previous owner had the 680cc big bore kit installed and its a kick start.. New side cases and plastic were still available from Honda.
Fun project and need a couple days to clear my garage up and back to sheaths. This one let's me roost my boys instead of them roosting their old man. At 54 I dont have too many years riding in the dirt left.:thumbsup:20201127_120929.jpg 20201127_120917.jpg 20201127_120847.jpg 20201110_020226.jpg 20201119_233243.jpg 20201023_210924.jpg 20201029_194323.jpg 20201011_174058.jpg 20201120_234026.jpg
