The "Ask Jo (NinJO) Thread"

Hi Jo, I try to limit this to quarterly, but I'm wondering if we can get a status update on the general progress for the active pre-orders.

All of the pre-orders are in some state of progress. The DEK and the K20 are on machines. The steel for the Shiv has been made but we have not received it yet.

Jo’s response to a previous question:
“Power cuts are the third of the blade closest to the handle and speed cuts are the third nearest the tip. For your 2x4, angle you are hitting the board at is also important. You want to go at an angle and maintain an adequate scarf. You don't want to get trapped in the wedge of doom..”

My ignorance showing, what is the difference between a power cut and speed cut? Also what’s a scarf in relation to the topic at hand. I had to put that disclaimer in before someone else jumps in and explains that a scarf is a length of material generally used in cold weather to wrap around your neck for warmth.

Similar to martial arts with a power break vs speed break;

A power cut is against a secured target. You want maximum momentum, getting your arm body behind the cut (as Nathan explained, striking slightly behind the CoB/CoP, and resisting the torque moment with your arm and bodyweight, which allows the blade to drive a little deeper.

A speed cut (in Bladesports; the rope cut), is on an unsecured target. You need the speed to make it through the target without/before overcoming the target's inertia and moving it aside.

Similarly, you use the edge near the tip for a speed cut with brush and small limbs/branches, and use a power cut, hitting closer towards the handle for thicker branches/logs etc.

The dowel and 2x4s require power to cut. The scarf is that v shape you are cutting. The width at the top should be about as wide as the board is tall. Maybe a little wider when you are learning.

A speed cut is like the rope, the paper, or the straw. There is more speed at the tip.

The Bladesports cuts are mostly (theoretically) designed to mimic real life cutting tasks. The rope might be a vine, while the vertical 2x4 is felling a tree and a horizontal is chopping wood.

I am going to try to do quarterly updates this year. We will see how it goes. 🙂

The update was a pleasant surprise! Great work Jo! :)

What are the details on the "Field Knife" from the classics? Is it a rerun of the FK1/FK2/HDFK, a signature version of the BFK, or something entirely new? And will the scales be backwards compatible with any of the other previous field patterns??

Also, will the scales on the upcoming ML Chopper be backwards compatible with any of the previous choppers, and if so, which ones?

The Field Knife we are doing this year will be the Basic Field Knife. Not really a classic, but a lot of folks have expressed interest. The Basic Field knife scales are compatible with FK2, but there is no lanyard hole. The Chopper scales will probably be backward compatible, but I think he is going to tweak the design a little, so it is hard to say for sure.

Sounds good! Thanks for the additional info. I'd love to see the scale options on the BFK expanded to include offerings like Double Red, Double Black, and ECAM. A signature version of the BFK would probably have a lot of support as well, with added jimping, swedge, and maybe even a lanyard hole? Would be cool to have both the basic and signature run at the same time like we saw with the SDFKs.
