The "Ask Nathan a question" thread

As far as I remember they are removable and FK2 scales fit them as Nathan said (correct me if Im wrong).
And if Im not wrong then this might help you out:

Also:

And:
Thanks.

Always been able to break one side free before this one. I'm wondering if this one accidentally got red loctite on both sides.

I guess I'll give it another whirl.

Nope, like H7per said, red on the left, blue on the right. They're snug but they should come right off.

I've encountered a few that had the loctite on the opposite side, or even a few that had loctite on both screws. I've taken a ton of these knives apart haha. I always hit them with a hot soldering iron for a bit before trying to back them out after ruining a few sets of screws in the past.

Hi Nathan, is it possible to see the new handle Uf2 next to a dek1 please?

Well, I guess I'm just getting old and feeble. Can't break them free. Not any of the three. And I just removed all three of them from an FK2 today for the first time with no problem. Anyway, they're starting to strip, so I'm just giving it up. Thanks, anyway!

I heat the screws up and don't have any problems. But I use a Hot-Air Rework Station to heat them up with.

There are a number of tasks here at CPK that are "Nathan" jobs. Enough so that I am the bottle neck here. There a bunch of processes that Jo, Mark, Bo or Freddy can do but there is often an aspect of it that needs me to get it started or to correct some issue that may come up.

The SDFK was running along side the Basic 5. It was only a couple weeks behind. But's stuck in a log jam here. The folder, same thing. We have a preliminary design and I even have the steel here to do a preliminary run of 100 but it needs a few weeks of my time.

The problem is the K18. It ended up being a much bigger time suck that I originally bargained for. So there are basically two classes of work for me here right now. 1: This needs Nate's attention right now (the Kia is literally on fire and we can't make scales with it anymore so we can't ship anything until that's fixed etc) and 2: Nate's "spare time" where I could get the SDFK into beveling, or the double edge FK2 into beveling, or other stuff that helps support everybody else's work flow or I can work out the details on the folder etc but instead I spend most spare moments on that goddamn K18.

I hired Freddy as a journeyman machinist who was going to provide me some support to get me working on other tasks but he ended up not being a good fit for us so he's gone now and I am overwhelmed with "emergency Nate stuff" like repairing machines, getting the Kia replacement into production, dealing with the issues created in the shop layout from the machine move etc.

We keep thinking I'm going to get the last of these K18s banged out. If I could just focus on that it would be done in two weeks and I could start on everything else. So. Two weeks. And then everything else will start rocking. lol.

Without blowing your own trumpet, what else do you think that you would've excelled at, had you not become a machinist? By the same token if you do decide to answer my Q, you must also riddle me this one: what would you have absolutely sucked at and glad that you never ventured into?

I will not accept lazy answers like pro athlete or top runway model although I do see the superior genes ;)

Prolly a porn star or maybe an evil super villain.

When I was a kid I wanted to be an inventor when I grew up. My degree is in product design and I worked in industry for quite a while. That's where I developed my CAD background. The design consulting could easily have turned into a plastics specialist or company sales rep etc.

I could have been a mold maker.

I'm probably not cut out for medicine, but it's interesting to me and I'm pretty good with my hands and fixing stuff and I'm not squeamish so I always thought I could have been a decent surgeon.

I could have worked in construction or been a builder.

I'm glad I never got into real estate or investment management or managing highly complex projects or large groups of people. My time management sucks, I don't interact with people well and I need to be able to see something tangible at the end of the day, not something abstract like a spread sheet or a memo.

Sometimes at the end of the day, I read over a well-composed memo with satisfaction...
Just kidding.
