Hi, aussieknifeknut! Welcome! .....erm, except for I actually do know how to cook. Vital life skill, growing up in my house. My mom wasn't a great cook, but she worked and went to school so we had to learn if we wanted something other than cereal on those days. Only problem is, There were 6 people in my family (3 males)....so with my crew compliment of 4 (all female except yours truly) I always have leftovers. As far as your stove, no worries. I posted up my two burner one of the same type. You can still camp and cook with it, yer just not going backpack camping with it.

Let's talk about mess kits/cooksets.

Whats the best/cheap cook set out there?

I just bought a cruddy $7 aluminum set from Walmart with a pan, bowl ('another pan to me), itsy bitsy pot with lid, and a plastic cup.

Browsing the web it seems that all the ones up to three times price are merely the same kit with different names on it and I'm not interested in paying $15 bucks for a single Stanley steel cookpot with 2 plastic cups I can't boil in..

I really like my Snow Peak Kettle No.1. You can see it on my Emberlit a page or so back. $25ish shipped, lower if you look perhaps.

Well my Emberlit has arrived, hopefully I'll get it out in the next couple weeks. I'm ready surprised by how light it is (titanium) and compact it is.

Alright! Freakin' sweet little stoves man. I love mine.

Thanks granitestateofmind. I get paid monthly , about mid month , that's when I'm gonna buy myself a trangia

The single kettle isn't doing it for me, in looking for more of a quality nesting kit.

Though it is a nice pot and looks like I could cram some other stuff in there

Here are a few I have. For specifically car camping, I also have an inexpensive charcoal grill, the Lodge cast iron charcoal grill, and a two-burner Coleman powerhouse stove.

First, My $20ish stove setup, A $6 Sterno grill, a $14 Trangia, and a custom titanium stand to bring the burner closer to the pot and stabilize it. :

My smaller, but slightly heavier Trangia setup, the Bushbox. Funny thing is the bushbox, despite its much smaller size, is 3 grams heaver than the Sterno(263g vs 260g).

And my largest "backingish" stove, the BioLite with KettlePot. This is a fairly heavy setup and uses a decent amount of space, but it works and works well. The whole stove fits into the KettlePot and also has a nested cup. My brother took one up(without the kettlepot) on the AT for an overnighter a few weeks ago with 3 other people and they used it exclusively for their fire needs(boiling water primarily) and they said it worked great. The only issue was the top was too larger for the smaller pots they were using, but it was easily remedied with the use of a couple sticks used as a pot stand on top. :)

If you're wanting to sit through 8 min of me rambling about the thing, I did an 18 degree light and burn test a few days ago to see how it would do. The wood I was using was still somewhat green and damp from being out in the snow.

Right now, my primary mess kit is the Stanley set and will continue to be unless it doesn't fit my needs at some point down the road. I love that it houses the two nested cups and will also fit my Trangia and the stand I made for it.

i have the stainless version of that. very solid.

the Ti version has me tempted.

big awkward though with the lid being separated and not self-storing. i'l survive. :D

That's the Pathfinder stainless one. It is an awesome kit and I've been using it for a while now. If you want a lid that is a little more compact, try the rothco one. I got one on flebay but you can now get them at Dave's store too. The Ti one from Heavy Cover is so awesome. It's a lot lighter, a lot more compact, but it does come with a high price. It's so worth it if you like high end gear but for most people looking for just something to use every once in a while, get the nalgene canteen and a canteen cup or spend a little more for the pathfinder set.

I'll try and post a pic of both together so you can see the size difference if you want.

Cool idea for an oven. I have a few Swedish mess kits, may give her a go:

OK, I decided I'm going with a "found fuel" stove. Firebox, Emberlit, or Vargo? This will be something to put in my pack and probably boil water / cook Ramen on it. I will probably still get a Jetboil, too, but for now I want to mess with a fire-box type of stove.

How much heat do these little Emberlits throw off compared to a small fire? would you use it for heat or just cooking?
