The Pathfinder Club - Members Only!

Welcome to the Pathfinder Club, koreamarine! Thank you for your thoughts on the 105 and for your service to our country! You have a very collectable and desirable early Pathfinder. Did you buy it new or pick it up along the way?

Thank you much!

I found this awesome little blade while scouring the auction sites for a similar age Buck 119. Sometimes you get some nice surprises!

Still, its a darn fine knife which will cut very nice and serve you well. I like the 105.Try buying a 5" knife today w/ 440C blade, well built w/ leather sheath and see what it costs? I don't think pictures could take us any further on from this point. Unless you care to destroy it in order to have it tested. Just enjoy it, go camping and use it. DM
This quote from David Martin was taken from a 2008 thread - the same year David joined BladeForums. It is the earliest comment I could find regarding his thoughts on the 105.

Tah, I like your sheath. I have used a 105 on many outdoor trips and like it. Even used it on processing meat birds, trimming brisket cutting up vegetables and other items around the home. It works for all this.
People should keep a couple around to try. DM
This quote is the second post in this thread making David the 1st member to join the Pathfinder Club after I started it! Both quotes exemplify the fact that David was a straight shooter, appreciated a good knife, and understood its application and limitations. What more could you ask of a Pathfinder Club member.

Rest in peace, my friend. You have found your path to our Lord in Heaven.

Guards and Pommels. Interesting how their shapes and lengths changed over the years. More evidence of early handwork. I pulled these photos from the internet for comparison and discussion.

A noticeable difference in these two inverted stamp models...

Two different pre-date code knives...

Curious, do you Pathfinders lean towards the small pommel or the large pommel with the more pronounced hook? 🤔

Yep, same here. My 70s Pathfinder has the small hook, so that's all I have ever known.

When re-handling this 105 I really wanted to do the pommel as on the solingen steel knife my dad gave me when I was a kid, which was given to him by his dad when he was a kid as well. I really like it but it is a large part of my abhorrence of carbon steel, I have had to clean this up so many times it isn't funny.
But at the same time I wanted to keep it more true to form of Buck.
I think the next one I do will be the different pommel and blue transparent lucite.

st8yd st8yd Great job on the re-handle! So, is that the original Buck pommel or did you make it from scratch?

Looks great, Jeff! Keep us posted on your friend's reaction, if you still decide to gift it. 👍
Update:

I just wanted to let you good folk know that the knife has been gifted to the fellow I spoke about. He is thrilled to have it and I'll try to get a photo at some point in the near future. It is his first Buck and may not be his last. 😁 He's been eyeing up a few of my 110s.

Please add "Gordon" to our list of names in the Pathfinder Club, if possible. I'm hoping that he'll even consider joining us here on Bladeforums in the future.

Thanks for the update, Jeff. What a great way to introduce a friend to the world of Buck knives! Our club rules are very simple and accommodating - no photo required, just word-of-honor of 105 ownership, but a person does need to be a registered user of BladeForums and make a post in this thread. Please do encourage Gordon to sign up. It would be a pleasure to hear from him! :)
