Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

Buck 284 and Cold Steel Candian Belt Knife. Both were less than $20 (each).

The Cold Steel is an Asian-made version of a Grohmann D H Russell Model 1. Cold Steel states the knife is a classic 50s modle but gives no credit to the originators. The story of the original is:

Many sportspersons come each year from the US and other countries to visit Canada and share in our fine fishing, hunting and camping. When visiting many knife shops, these visitors often asked to see a Canadian sports knife but none could be found. Although there were numerous foreign designs of outdoor knives available, the visitors and many of our own best known woodsmen felt that there should be a truly Canadian designed knife that would challenge the traditionally designed knives of the past. A concerned Canadian heeded the call and decided he wanted to be a part of it. Mr Deane H Russell of Ottawa Ontario invited Canadian outdoor writers to cooperate in conduting national scale inquiries amoung professional woodsmen and experienced sportsmen in an effort to discover the features most desired in a modern outdoor knife. Through a newspaper article Mr Grohmann met with Mr Deane H Russell and together they set out to design a truly Canadian knife. After field testing through hunters and trappers across the north, the DH Russell Best Knife #1 was born, which along with various other designs won many awards and recognitions worldwide. Grohmann and Russell created three more models together, the #2, #3 and #4.

I probably wouldn't have bought the CS if it wasn't for Grohmann. I have a pair of the mini folders. One of these days I'll get one of their FB's.

Where did you find the 284 with a nail nick? All I’m seeing is the thumb stud version.Thanks.
I'm not 100% sure. I think I got it direct from Buck on their "Web Specials" page. Its not listed now.
That page is fairly fluid and lists variations. For example, it recently had the 722 Spitfire with a nail nick instead of a thumb hole.

Thank you, I’ll check there.

Not sure if this Imperial Frontier 4435 'Double Eagle' Homelite advertising knife (The clip blade has a Homelite Chainsaw etch on the pile side) was "thrifty" when new.
It may have been (quote-unquote) "FREE" with purchase of a Homelite Chainsaw, Leaf Blower, Hedger, Weed Wacker, Edger, Tiller, or other Groundskeeping/Garden power tool.

Woof woof, I like it!
Thanks, Dale. :)
It's a cheap copy of a "real" knife. One I've seen is from a well-known German cutlery company (but apparently not well-known enough to ME to remember what company it was).

Lance, I think those Rough Ryders (and, previously, Colts) with buckshot bone covers are handsome knives!:thumbsup::cool:

My thrifty knife for this Thursday is a MAM sheepsfoot:

I really like this one. Unfortunately my "inox" blade has some rust spots along the edge. It'll sharpen out but was a bit surprising last time I pulled it out.

Great knife though.
