Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

Most of my Marble's knives are rock-solid, but this one's blades seem a bit loose to me.
Strange. I've had 4(?) of the MR278's.
Three were all tight, the blade and tools all around a "5" pull.
One arrived with a busted back spring (bought on the "big jungle" site) , so the tools on the busted side have a >"1" pull.

Yes. SMKW sent a replacement, at no cost to me. They did not want the broken one back, so I saved it for parts ... if ever needed.
For some reason, they also sent a replacement Marbles SPORK (no "MR" number), even though I told them there was nothing wrong with the SPORK, and I did not need another. I told them "Just a replacement knife is all I need and want."πŸ™„
(The MR278 I bought came with a SPORK.)

If this is a thrifty knife, I'd like to find one.
Could you provide some information on it?

Thanks!

Get out the hammer!! 😁
I don't know, Charlie. I'm getting a bit loose in places now that I'm in my golden years, and I'd hate for someone to advise my wife to "Get out the hammer!!"

...
Yeah, I was surprised when I noticed that mine rattles when it's shaken, and the blades wiggle.

One of my favorite cheap knives. Has beautiful red bone.

INQUIRY:
Up to what amount qualifies as "thrifty" in 2025?

I suspect some of my accumulation that previously did not qualify when I bought it, now qualify.
Gone are the days of "under $10 to $15."

I refuse to consider any knife gifted to me as "thrifty".
While they did not cost me whatever price the person paid, I know some were unthrifty ... for example, the Case and GEC's I have.

I was thinking $20 and less, but then I consider spending $100+ for a pocket knife to be extravagant. Though that doesn't I haven't done it a few times myself 😁

I would say $30 and under. I have only 3 knives I spent more than that on, though more would exceed that if purchased new today.

Of course a dozen eggs now costs an arm and a leg, so maybe β€œthrifty” would be anything under the value of 2 human limbs.

I’m a day late for Wooden Wednesday, but this works for Thrifty Thursday too:

I think the definition of "thrifty" is very subjective, and different people will have VERY different "thrifty thresholds".
I used to always use "under $10" as my definition of thrifty, but a couple of years ago, I "raised the stakes" to "under $12".
I thought about bumping it up again this year, but I ordered 8 Rough Ryder knives last November and 4 of them were under $10, so I think I'll stick with my "under $12" criterion for a while longer.

(I suppose I could try to find the CURRENT prices for a set of knives I bought previously for less than $10 (or $12) each, and use that current price to set my current definition of "thrifty". Probably wouldn't try that before summertime, though.)

I guess for me it is context. Thrifty could mean a dirt cheap price, superior value, or just a smoking deal on something. The price of stuff has gone up so much, now a new Opinel #8 is $19 (before shipping) a Douk Douk costs $35, and a victorinox classic SD is between $20-$25.

and rising. πŸ‘Ž Most new standard Rough Ryders are pushing $20.⁰⁰ now. (excluding the CASE/BΓΆker Tree Brand priced "Reserve" series.) ☹️
