Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

zRfYCx0.jpg

Bought this one a while back to replace the one I had years and years ago. I think it was owned by a mechanic, judging by the amount of greasy black crud in it. Repeated soakings with all sorts of lubes and solvents have failed to remove all of it, but I have been having another go at it these past couple of days.

Italian sailor's knife. I got this 2 for $15, but gave one to my brother.

Found the United Cutlery 1209 laying on a walking path in our town. Saw one for sale for 5 bucks on BLADEMATRIX.
I love to carry my Camillus Cub Scout knife, takes me back to my scouting days.
I love Thrifty Thursday, most of us “enthusiasts “ probably started with cheap knives. I usually carry my more expensive stuff but I really like digging out some of my older and cheaper pieces.834306A9-6C5D-4911-8DB0-5EF9A8FC66AA.jpeg

I really like the stamping on those blades. I have a Barlow with that blade stamping in my pocket right now, prepping to go to the soaking pan soon.
Have you tried this stuff? I've found that it literally "dissolves" rust and crud. As you can see, I don't immerse, I just spray and let it be for a spell.

Thanks - I will have to try that

I tried dish soap, regular WD40, bicycle chain lube spray, and repeated soakings in mineral oil. This last go round it seems to be coming out clean, at last!

Thrifty woodies: SARGE Official BSA Barlow (around $8.⁰⁰ on the big river site back in 2014/2015/2016 ... not sure witch of them years) when I bought it.
(Discontinued, since they no longer have a BSA contract.)
Buck 389 Canoe with "Walnut" Dynawood covers. My first (of ... several ... ) of the pattern. 2014 date code. If my memory is functioning this early, I believe it was around $15.⁰⁰ at the Wally's, in Seville, OH. I carried it paired with a Buck 301 Stockman and a 110, bought "... at the same time, same place ..." as they used to say at the end of each episode of 'BATMAN' after Batty and Robin had been captured, tied up, and were about to be offed in some stupid/idiotic way by Joker or Penguin, or Riddler. 🙄🤣 and a few other TV shows in the 1950's and 1960's.

That Barlow is pretty cool. I may have to try to track one down, hopefully I can find one reasonable enough.

Marbles ram's horn Barlow - low cost, high quality IMHO. (Don't know why a Böker cap is in the photo, but I have 3 photos with the Marbles Barlow posed on that cap. o_O )

I hope you don't mind, but I agree with your assessment of the MR365 Ram Horn Barlow.

The matching MR360 Ram Horn Canoe is also a fine knife of equal quality, IMHO. They make a wonderful pair to carry.

mebby you have the Böker cap as a subliminal message to Böker to produce a Barlow (and their other popular patterns, such as canoe, large stockman, etcetera) with horn covers? If they ever do, I hope they use carbon steel blades, like on their Beer Barrel series, instead of Stain Less.
