Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

I thought I posted my pick for this week right after breakfast, but I apparently spent time setting up a schedule of what to post in this thread through the first of June without actually posting today's choice. :rolleyes:o_O:oops:

Like last week, I'm going with an Okapi this week - the Biltong model today:

I bought a set of 3 folders from Cannon back in 2018 for under $12. I'll post them in this thread individually for the next three weeks. Here's the spearpoint knife from the set. They all have a bail and brown hardwood handles with anchor shield.

After a little work, this is the best $20 knife on the planet! Seriously.

Micarta, carbon steel and half stops. A little bit of a strong pull on the main clip and lighter pulls on the other two. No blade rub.

Spent some time rounding out and buffing all of the sharp edges on the liners, springs, bolsters and micarta. Then removing the mirror finish from the blades. This took it from good to great.

The Carbon II series is a gem. I have a few and all are excellent users. My biggest complaint is that the blades have an odd wavy finish that is typically hidden by the mirror polish. If I had to nitpick... The giant R on the bolster is just obnoxious.

Ha! Right at midnight for thrifty Thursday

$10.43 with tax and shipping. Something about it just said it needed to be here. It had a heavy surface coat that was a mixture of rust and gummy funk. A little work this evening and a good sharpening and this is good to go for another 3000 miles.

It is about 3 1/8". Super thin. The covers are jigged celluloid of some type (maybe paper). Very flammable. Don't ask me how I found that out. They are pinned to the steel liners and it has Integral steel bolsters. There is a hole for a bail, but it is long gone. Very snappy. Minimal blade play (just a slight wiggle side to side)

The only marking is a proud USA stamp. I have no idea who made it.

Gotta love that no-nonsense shield.

Here's the third Cannon anchor knife, and a "bonus pic" of the entire set. Not sure what kind of blade this third knife has; I'd probably call it a giant coping blade, but with the nautical theme of the trio, it's probably some kind of rope knife.

Could it be a "Rams Foot"?
I  think that is what the THEM of old called a straight edged blade that tapered wider from the tang to the point.

I'm a RR fan/user, but be careful. - I've had two of the newer RR liner locks fail completely. I just used my Dremel cutting wheel to remove the brass and filed it smooth. Make good slip joints.

I suppose that's possible, although I thought "Ram Foot" was a name GEC recently invented for one of their sheepsfoot blades (pattern 933119).
Would the bottom two Cannon knives in my recent photo (with the hedgehog statue) be Rams Foot examples?

I remember reading here the small locking Sodbuster Jr. style/type RR made had an issue with the pivot, while the full size version lacked that problem. I don't know if they fixed the problem on the Jr. size.
When I decided to get their versoin of the Sodbuster, I went with the full size Carbon Classic, in yellow. I wanted carbon steel, and yellow.
I might remove the tab lock someday. TBH I have not carried it enough to bother doing anything but set the edge, and strop it. I wonder if adding a secondary blade is an option ... I do like two or more blades than one ...
I still don't get what makes the sodbuster pattern so "great" and/or popular. 🤔

I dunno ... got a coin we could flip?
My guess is "yes", but what do I know?

I think thrifty thurday might be my favorite. Great show!

I just ripped the liner lock out of a rough Ryder redbone sodbuster. Better off without. Nice knife but a bit big for just tossing in a pocket. The liner lock didn't really lock and without it the knife functions perfectly.

This is the one I should have grabbed. Very nice! That carbon steel they use is awesome.

Cannon anchor knife,
I don't have the anchor ones, but your posts reminded me that this canon brand knife was buried upstairs. I'm sure it was an inexpensive eBay/Amazon purchase and it's been here for probably 6 or 7 years. It's nice enough I just never really used it all that much. I like yours much more!
