Today in a weeks time I will be on my way. First I will drive down to Laguiole, from there to Espalion where I will fetch some knives Jérôme Latreille has made for me. On Friday I will drive up to La-Monnerie-le Montel for a day of hiking in the "montagne thiernoise". Saturday morning I will visit the knife show. Unfortunately I will have to leave for home around noon. This years line-up is truly impressive, alltough Jérôpme Latreille is missing. So it's totally worth a day's drive!

Beautiful. Cayron does guillochage in a hexagonal hive pattern that looks very fitting with a bee mouche.

A simple full handle by Pierre-Yves Joyeux (walnut - XC75)

Wonderful. Your knife helped convince me to place an order for my own with Joyeux.

Laguioles are now marketed as an artisanal good, a future heirloom to pass down. I have a few of those, but I have also picked up a couple of older, inexpensive offerings. I enjoy these knives which are faithful to the laguiole's humble peasant origins.

Older semi-crafts are sometimes of better quality than some of today's semi-crafts.
Pierre-Yves Joyeux is a friendly craftsman who does good work, so don't hesitate to talk to him to ensure that your knife is just right for you.

Another example of his work.
"laguiole" full burr alder handle, san maï steel blade forged by Davide Steri, fly chiselled by François Seychal, assembly by Pierre-Yves Joyeux.

Already ordered and received. Here's an old picture, the knife has some patina now.

Now to find a full horn handled FdL with the old stamp like yours. That stamp with just "LAGUIOLE" and the silhouette of a knife is perhaps my favorite of all the stamps from the different laguiole manufacturers.

I also have the same kind of knives as you ;)
My first Laguiole and my grandfather's

Your grandfather's knife is a treasure. May I ask what made it EXTRA? Was the craftsmanship better? Did David use better steel? Is it the additional tools?

I think "Extra" is just to catch the eye, like "Garanti", "Véritable"... 🤷🏻‍♀️

I agree with you, the old stamp looked better, and meant the resurrection of Laguiole made Lags. But the imagination of past makers had no limit :

Le Mirador! I have one of those!

Thank you for that Alain. Now that I have a David and a Rossignol, are there other good, industrial laguioles that you'd recommend? Preferably with carbon steel blades, of course. ;)

Nice Mirador, they were made by Mr Boulogne and Son from 1945 in Thiers. The brand was bought in 1998 by F. Pitelet, Thiers. I don't think the name is still in use.
I have to admit laguiole is not my prefered knife, I have only two, both gifts , one G. David thanks to our own Will Power Will Power . Apart those makers you know already, many propose various sizes, from 9cm to 13cm. Coignet, Le Fidèle, Roger Orfèvre, Vauzy-Chassangue, Actiforge, Chevalerias, Brun, Calmels, Massoptier, Lacaze, etc.

Not mine, a rare Aile de Cygne (swan wing)

edit :if you look on the French bay you may also find older makes. (usually in not very good condition)
