Traditional French Fry day

I've posted this knife before, but it deserves more exposure. It is about 30 years old now. I gave it as a gift to my brother in the early '90s, he gave it back to me (it was languishing on his work bench) around '10, and now it just waits until the horn scales fall apart and I re-handle it with something interesting like Colorado juniper or Rocky Mountain elk antler. Every time I carry it, I am impressed by how handy it is.

Something vintage and rather hard to find. A variation of a regional knife made by "MC Thiers - Maison des Couteliers à Thiers". Scales seem to ba made of bone.

Vintage is great!! Nice to find in good shape!! And Rare!! Your knife looks near mint from here!!

Here is an oldie from our friend Jean-Marc!! ( Âchillepattada Âchillepattada )Aged Lag 3.jpgAged Lag 1.jpg

As much as I prefer natural materials for handles, sometimes I wish the maker took more care in matching the covers. I've learned that it's not always the maker's fault. Take this Cognet Capucin for example. The handle is crafted from a single piece of horn. The mark side looks brown with blonde highlights. Turn the knife over and the horn is more blonde with darker streaks.

Interesting and strange, but this variety is what makes natural materials so beautiful and desirable.

Regardless of the variation, that is a great looking knife, Christian!!
Here is a knife with purposeful difference between the Mark and Pile sides!!Capucin Mark.jpgCapucin Pile.jpgCapucin Tang.jpg
Sorry for posting an English knife here folks!! It is for illustrative purposes only!!
The black Horn handles have a large "feather" on the Mark, or 'show" side of the knife!! The black Horn still frames the "feather"!!! Nicely cut!!!
I have always been struck by this knife's resemblance to a French Capucin!!

My apologies for being a day late!! I am hoping to get an answer to a question about these exotic Opinels! The top one has Bubinga handles, but I have lost the box for the No.8 and cannot remember the wood species!! Does anyone recognize it???Exotic Opinels 1.jpgExotic Opinels 2.jpg

If the larger of the two, highly figured Walnut?
Color and grain remind me of some '50's to 90's rifles and shotguns I've had, from when nice Walnut was used on production guns ... and inexpensive ones, at that .....

It's not Walnut, Steve. I know walnut well, even Circasian , but it's some "different" name!!

Throwing my own 2 cents in on this.... I would guess that it's a type of rosewood. Pretty broad and ambiguous still, since there are many varieties, but it has the correct color tone and grain patterns to fit. Also, Opinel doesn't seem to ever have gone too far off the deep end with exotic wood!

At any rate, it's a beauty!!

"Bocote?"
I surrender, and will shut up.
Padouk perhaps?

Thanks Steve, Christian and Steve!!! I have a message in to Opinel!!
Your answers may or may not have merit, but let's wait and see what the Horse's mouth says!! 😁

Odd, I thought it was Bubinga but you say the top one is that. But I think the top one is Padouk
