Carothers and Guns

I do not have experience with the L frame .44 but have shot many rounds through light .44’s. I mostly carry a snub 629 when doing property chores and it lets you know when it goes off for sure. I used to carry and shoot a 329PD and it is a joy to carry but not so much to shoot. After shooting it some, I switched to Buffalo Bore .44 mag hard cast ‘low recoil’ which still have respectable ballistics/penetration but WAY more comfortable to shoot.
My S&W AirLite scandium 2” .357 has serious muzzle snap.

Depending on your plans for the gun, I think you will have more opportunity to carry and use a .357 or .44- they are simply great rounds for many circumstances but full disclosure I am biased! 🤣

Good luck with your search.
Thanks for sharing your real world experience!

I own a 357 mag Ruger LCR snub-nose. It's got the hogue grips, which help, but heavy mag loads can bite you if you hold it incorrectly.

There's no way I want to shoot 44 magnum out of anything with a barrel shorter than 4 inches. I'm actually leaning more towards a 6 inch barrel. I don't plan to use a 44 for concealed carry anytime, so the extra barrel length and weight won't hurt anything.

My favorite 629 for ‘all around’ use is the 5”. Hard to explain why- but it just feels right. I don’t know that the slightly longer sight radius makes much difference, but it is a great length. Personally I don’t like carrying handguns with barrels over 6” unless it is a hunting gun in a shoulder rig.
Good luck with your search.

I'd assume the 1 extra inch of sight radius has more impact on potential accuracy than that same inch does on muzzle velocity, but I could be totally wrong.

That's probably what it would be; camp/hunting gun in a chest or shoulder rig.

I will sound like a paid spokesperson but check out Diamond D Leather from Wasilla, Alaska- the guides chest rig is just perfect.

Let’s see, which gun goes on the chopping block to pay for daughters car, hmm.

Note: all my CPK knives have been marked safe from the sale.

What is your impression with staccato? Is it worth that money? I’m just torn between staccato and DW dwx. dW cheaper but don’t have a cut for the dot. If I’ll send it to cz custom, it will be cost $300 min. I did that before Covid. So , in the end I’ll get 2400 against 3000, not too much but anyway what you recommend if you’re tried the both guys?

I just got it last week and haven't had a chance to shoot it. However I have wanted one for a long time. I was going to just get the Springfield prodigy and be done with it but once I want something I know I wouldn't have been happy until I got it. Buy once, Cry once. My Staccato P has a sticker of $3408.00 how you see it in the picture brand new. I bought it from a gent on 1911addicts.com for $2365 shipped with everything you see in pic. He had only shot it 300 rounds and his reason for selling was he went on up to the Staccato XC model which is around $5K.

Just dry firing the gun I can tell it is a very high quality pistol. On par with my Wilson Combats, Nighthawks and Les Baer 1911's. I know I wont be disappointed when I shoot it next week. My only issue is I hope I am not like the person I bought it from and decide now I want the XC model and have to spend $5,000! I guess good problems to have but first I have to buy my daughter a car for college.

That's a dangerous forum to be on, but so far I have resisted buying anything. So far. Karl Beining comes up with some real interesting oldies, though, I almost gave in and bought the unknown smith customized big-letter 1978 Colt, and the reverse two-tone customized 1943 GI Colt is screaming to me.

Much like this one.

I handled a Staccato XC and a WC EDC X-9 recently (but didn't shoot them). Both are very solid and well made. I think the ergos of the EDC X-9 slightly edged it out for me. I'd have a tough time deciding, and either way you can't go wrong. Luckily for my pocketbook, I'm not planning on buying either any time soon. But man, the 1911 rabbit hole can get expensive fast...

The only thing I want to do to my Staccato P is send it back to factory and get a threaded barrel fitted. That way I can run a comp on the end (like a XC) or also use my 9mm suppressors when I want. Other than that I have no plans on getting the XC version. Maybe when I was younger and shooting matches I would have liked it but I don't shoot competitively anymore. Of course I didn't have any money when I was younger either:)

My thing with Staccato is that I think they're too expensive to be making compromises in my tastes. I do recognize that my tastes aren't everybody's, so it's not that they're doing anything wrong, it's just not quite right for me, and I'm not paying Staccato prices for something that isn't exactly right for me.

What I really wanted out of Staccato was a C2 with the slimmed grip of the CS and the Tac grip texture that is currently only on the CS and the P. The CS is the same height as the C2, just shorter on the nose. Which is fine for the currently en vogue appendix carry, but having a long, fat grip is the two worst characteristics for a strong-side IWB guy. The short barrel actually makes that worse because the weight is now more in the butt with no barrel length to stabilize it in the holster, especially with a high ride.

Or a C that basically takes P365-type mags. That would have been great.

But I don't want to buy a $2,400 pistol where I just need to immediately send it out for an aftermarket grip stipple for another $150-250.

My friends got GM in few divisions in USPSA without staccato. I feels well with CZ custom. Stacatto one of those things that you can afford, but not because you need it. I believe your XC waiting for you. -).
Ps : I still have doubts whether I need a knife for 1k for the yard work or no? I said to myself I’m full 6 months ago, but the process got started again lol
