Carothers and Guns

Handguns are great because they are easy to carry (I prefer Diamond D chest rig), and leave your hands free for fishing rod, etc but are no substitute for a long gun. (IMO)
That was one of the mistakes that got the guide (Mark Uptain) killed.

Had a G20, but he left it by the pack while field dressing the animal the client had shot. When the bear attack happened, Mark was unarmed. The client, unfamiliar with Glocks, apparently ejected the mag when he tried grabbing the G20.

He threw it to Mark, but there were no gunshot wounds when they caught and killed the bear. It WAS liberally covered in bear spray, and an empty can of bear spray was found near Uptain’s body.

If he’d kept the G20 on him in a chest rig, he might’ve been able to save himself

If I had to bet my life on it, it would be a shotgun/rifle over a handgun.
I agree 100%.

If I'm being honest though, I'm not going to pack a heavy shotgun or rifle unless I'm deep in big grizz country. More often than not, my 12 gauge with slugs is a camp gun. It doesn't typically go with me to the field. Even if you choose to carry something like that, if it becomes cumbersome it's going to end up on your back or over your shoulder on a strap, which won't help you at all if a grizzly charges within 50 yards.

I carry a 10mm chest rig and the pistol is attached to me with a lanyard. If I pull the pistol and get knocked down, it will still be close enough I can get to it. I also wear a bear bell and make noise when I'm hiking in grizzly country to give them a heads up I'm coming their way.

Personally, I think alerting grizzlies to your presence and not surprising them is your best defense (in most places).

You can only prepare so much. I view Grizzlies much the same way as I do tornadoes; try to stay out of their way, but if one comes your way have some form of preparation.

I hike Glacier yearly and either carry the Glock 10mm loaded with Underwood 200gr HC or the Glock 17 with Underwood 147gr HC if around a lot of people. Wife carries the Glock 48 with 147gr HC.

Always have my light weight J frame Smith in 357 mag loaded with 180 gr hard cast in a cross draw holster.

Have Gunfighters Kenai chest holsters for both of mine, wife carries strong side.

I’ve always felt pretty safe doing this.

I have a Kenai chest rig for my Springfield xdm competition 5.25 in 10mm. It's a great setup for hiking.
