Carothers Performance Knives, Use & Abuse. Take 2

I use PM steels but I have never claimed that the steels I use are better because it is a PM steel. But I'm beginning to think that perhaps it is possible that the PM process can actually improve a steel, and not just render certain high alloys possible.

This reminded me of Larrin's discussion on XHP (and possibly others?) , comparing it to the non-PM version of the steel, which found improvements in the steel once in the PM format -

Seems like people aren't really disagreeing - the line has become, "He provides useful input" vs. "I can't unclench my jaw with this nut on the screen", which are not mutually exclusive.

Personally, his shtick is like nails on a chalkboard to me, but I'm viewing it in entertainment-mode - I'm not making knives for a living. I absolutely end up watching/reading stuff from people I want nothing to do with for professional reasons, too.

Jackass wasn’t my cup of tea back in the day. In no way am saying there aren’t things to learn from his destruction videos.

But what he does is like taking a Corvette 3LZ off roading and rock climbing then bashes it because it performs like shit. “But I want to know what it’s capable of” is not a reason to break a knife by throwing a stone at it and tell people it’s shit when it breaks. Slapping it against an iron rod and stabbing a car tells what exactly about cutting geometry?

He “finds problems” where none exist.

Never mistake a lack of talent for genius.

For sure I miss my poor sacrificial BFK…but my other one is on my hip so we good fam😁

I have noticed he has really toned down his statements and gotten more objective unless the knife does demonstrably worse that either marketing claims or comparable knives.

I appreciate you biting the bullet and sending your lamb to be slaughtered, the discussion and the possibility of a new offering from Nathan and the crew.

Now go clean your sheath before I get the vapors 🤣

Joe x's test makes sense and may seem a little crazy.
But by doing so, he was able to test the limits of a knife by destroying it, letting us know what level of performance it really is at, and at the same time, the destruction process was able to show the problems in every aspect, providing some reference for subsequent optimization and improvement.
I admire him, his behavior is similar to a "pioneer". Nowadays, the performance of knives is basically overflow, ordinary people can not use the difference, but in his place, we can see the most realistic situation, so that we can be more rational and multi-angle to understand a variety of knife products!

Exactly

There is an elephant in the room here, Nathan the Machinist Nathan the Machinist : a year ago, JoeX has been openly verbally very abusive to another knife maker here, including the maker's family; note that through the whole episode, the maker behaved with integrity, IMO. This stuff has been deleted from the tubes, but some of us remember. These internet reviews can turn around quickly, technically valuable or not. Just saying.

Is there anything you would change about the prototype after watching “the test”?

That's a really good question.

I don't really know the answer to that.

Other than using a low aust temp to form essentially a medium carbon lath martensite spring steel from the 3V (mid to upper '50s HRC) there's really nothing I can think of to have done differently that would still qualify as a "knife", and I really don't want to put my name on a shit heat treat like that.

I definitely do not want to stir up more shit. Could you send me a PM with a description of what you're referencing because I am not aware of a lot of the backstory there. I'm only aware of what I can currently see, this whole situation was not on my radar until recently.

This was already brought up.

I think that's because he got some backlash for acting like an obnoxious prick for no real reason.

I'm glad he chilled out because a lot of the stuff he used to say was incredibly stupid/over the line; to the point that I think a fair response would have been to punch him in the face.

Maybe that's why he wears a mask.

I've been wanting to test the limits of a hard use neck knife. Typical abuse like Amazon boxes, bags of mulch, candy wrappers, and loose threads. Nathan, perhaps you'd like to make a prototype to send my way for testing. I'd be happy to film the carnage. Thanks in advance.
