First Knife You Remember as a KID

The first knife that caught my attention was a SAK, or any SAK for that matter. For my 4th birthday I got my first knife, a Helle Speider Gutt. Really nice kids knife, but not as cool as a a SAK.

For my 6th birthday I got my second knife, and finally a SAK, a Victorinox Climber, that I still have and use.

I remember the first knife that really got me excited more so than the Buck or Schrade folders was the famed Rizzuto that seems to be getting popular once again as the population ages. Traded a bunch of porno mags and a box of train parts for one and absolutely could not stop flicking it. Had it all oiled up and working great when it was unknowingly dropped on a movie theater floor. As I exited the movie, I heard a clank, thought nothing of it and left only to later realize that it had slipped out of my pocket in the dark. Ever since then, I check under my seat most everywhere before I leave somewhere to make sure I didn't drop anything and this is ongoing for the last 40 years. When I asked Paul P (Burn) to make me a Rizzuto with updated materials, he laughed and said NO. Good thing I have a mint 11" Rizzuto to play with now as I stroll down memory lane. šŸ¤

Donā€™t remember the brand but it was a scout knife given to me by a guy dating my mother. It was the first sharp knife I ever handled and it didnā€™t take long to cut myself. Donā€™t know what happened to it. Maybe confiscated by my mother?

The first real knife I remember getting as a kid was a Victorinox Executive SAK. The orange peeler tool actually came in handy as I loved oranges and there was always one in my lunch.
I'm a boomer so in those days it was more common than not for every boy to carry a pocket knife at school unlike today.

This is an easy one for me. A military issue medium/small Bowie with a fuller and stacked leather handle. My grandfather, a Korean War Vet, used to show me his knife collection every time I visited, which was quite often. I would have been between 4-6 when he started letting me handle his knives (in secret), and all I remember among them was his Buck 110 - which he carried every day - and the Army issue Bowie.

I used to dream of that Bowie and having my own some day. It had a nice deep patina and some staining, a short clip, a brass guard (which was a bit loose), but the best of all is that this knife would always come with a story.

As my grandfather told it, he was behind enemy lines. He was swimming toward his objective, and used THAT knife to slice the throat of a North Korean sentry that he surprised on the beach. The stains on the knife - he told me - was enemy blood.

A few years after he died, when I was maybe 10, I told my grandmother about our secret knife talks and the story he would tell over and over about the Bowie he used to kill the North Korean sentry. She laughed, and explained to me that my grandfather was a heavy equipment operator and never left friendly territory!

People who know tell me you can't remember anything at three years old; the mind's must not wired for it. But I remember being very young and looking up at even short old ladies (who must have been...oh, 38). Anyway, I reckon the first knife I actually owned was one my parents got me at a carnival. It was a Wild West sort of thing. Anyway, it had a leather sheath with those long leathery things hanging off, like the Indians used to have. The whole thing must have been a couple of inches, tops, but I had that knife for years.

I began wondering if most of you have kept your knives from way back or, like me, lost them or had 'em took. The knife I had was pretty hideous, but I still wish I had it. But I carried it for a long time, and to school.
My first memories was a very old Boker (ebony scales and brass bolsters) from my Mum, of course I never knew it was a Boker at all but I knew it was as i got older and started to look at brands etc. One of the blade was knackered though. it's still around the house somewhere LOL. The blade steel was carbon and held a damn good edge but the tang section of the larger blade was damaged/worn out and so too the pin and end of the spring. Maybe it could get repaired who knows?

Two knives --
First is a Bowie knife .... I was 9 or 10 years old ( I think 10 ) ..
After that is the Camp King ... My father killed it while we were on a country drive ..
A few years ago I found a nice clean Camp King , so I bought it ..
I haven't found that Bowie anywhere .. ( ? ) Was it a German one ? ( 1973 vintage )
Well , it's not like I have a shortage of knives ..

Mine was a Imperial Barlow. All I rember was it was black and the coolest thing I had ever owned. I don't know exactly how old I was but it was single digits. I remember stealing a razor blade. Double sided, from my Dads pack and cutting 4 of the fingers on my fight hand since I put it in my front pocket. Didn't get in trouble when I told my Mom. I was less than 5, so the early 60's. Times have changed.

My first knife was a no-name, bulky folder with imitation stag scales. It was the kind with a folded spoon on one side, a folded fork on the other, one large blade and one short blade. I was so proud of having it, I would always carry it to our cub scout meetings...

Somewhere between journeys I lost it, I think I probably dropped it in the lake...and then my Dad gave me Granddads old RN knife, with a marlinspike on one end and a sheepsfoot blade on the other. I kept that one until some nice barracks room thief decided to take it.

When Dad died I ended up with his V-42 (original issue), which I donated to the Museum of the Regiments...

Since then I guess I have had hundreds of knives...my present favorite is a little Condor mini bushlore...

My dad had this old fixed blade knife that he had made out of a file when he was a teenager. It was either kicking around in the kitchen, or taken on fishing trips, etc. I think he still has it.

A red Victorinox classic I found on the ground at an amusement park when I was 3, but my mom took that till i was " old enough " and never found it till a few years back.

From there it was a dollar store Victorinox knockoff my dad bought me when I was 7, it was enough to learn knife safety with but didn't last all that long.

Easy.
My Uncle Bob was home on leave, having just finished his tour of duty in Vietnam, before reporting for duty in Germany, in 1961.
He gave me his issue Camillus Demo Knife.
I was 6 at the time.
No idea what happened to it. I think my mum stole it (and either trashed, or gave to my future stepbrother, along with my bicycle, and most of my toys) when she divorced my dad in '66. :(

I got my own issue Demo knife (made by Western, this time) from the Army Reserves, in '75. I still have that one.

The first knife I remember is long gone, but it was like this...

Very first I can remember was a tiny old school slipjoint, dunno what make, it's been far too long - think I was around 5 or 7 years old?? Sometime later I got one just like Stelth had mentioned - thank you for reminding me! - but it was lost on a fishing or camping trip.
Next most memorable one is a little Buck 506 that I still have after >35 years - my dad found it on the street & it had clearly been run over at least once, but the blade was intact & locked up solid. That was my first lockback which seemed pretty cool at the time, despite the road rash. ;)

"First Knife You Remember as a KID"

Easy question, remember it well. Tarzan's knife carried by Ron Ely in the 1960s TV show. I dreamed about that knife. šŸ‘

Pretty sure my first was the fixed blade PIC made in Germany. Bone or stag handle and maybe a 4 inch grooved blade. Uncle bought it for me and paid around $3. Of course that was back around 1961.
