Lets talk GEC!

After reading the M&G posts I was inspired to post a pic. Here's a couple 54's in Ebony and Worm Grove bone.

very nice looking #54s - love the worm groove

I think it’s because it’s one that once someone gets it the only way they let it go is from their cold dead hands, whether they have one, three or more.

Not a criticism in any way, we like what we like but I don’t get it. Based on current prices I’m not likely to try one unless the produce another large run. They do seem to inspire some serious loyalty and are pretty unique in the current price run ups that mostly favor the larger single blade patterns.

I’m sure there’s an exception to the rule (anytime I say something definitive about GEC, there always seems to be an exception ;)), but they generally don’t do an EO notch on the spearpoint #25’s. Here are some non-Barlow spearpoint #25’s from the 2015 run. The notch on the orange jigged bone was added by Bob (@BigBiscuit).

Of course, I personally like the EO notch on these. :D

Good looking stag #25. I remember shopping for those. I bought mine from a dealer who had them listed individually, and missed out on my first choice because I waited a few hours and had to go with my second choice. Funny how things have changed. :D

I still think I ended up with a nice one, and I ended up grabbing a sheepsfoot with the same serial number, too.

I agree with you Barrett . Both of your Stags are pretty nice .

Re: the Grinling Whittaker’s... They’re a neat knife. I think it’s a crying shame (if true, as has been suggested on here by several posters) that GEC won’t be producing any more of them due to some people whining about blade rub. The thing is slim and svelte and also has three blades packed in there. Press the blades hard when you open them and they will surely rub, it’s just physics.

Can anyone name a GEC whittler, on any pattern that has been run twice? Even the sfo norfolks were different, 2 vs 3 blade. Not beeing a jerk, for my own knowledge, as I cant remeber any off the top of my head.

Didn’t realize they weren’t likely to do another run, but it does help explain the price for a used one.

I wouldn’t recommend anyone get one at the prices they’re going for now, I was lucky enough to get a used one at a decent price a while back. Just get a case carpenter’s whittler and call it a day.

Need better definition...any pattern run twice? They made two runs of Beer Scouts, different covers but still same long pull sheepsfoot blade and crown lifter on 15 frame. There are others too...maybe one run had a nail nick while another had a long pull but the 73 comes to mind...the 73 even had a pattern finale and then was released again.

I don't have blade rub on either the Tidioute or Northfield versions I own. I think GEC's reluctance to make them again has to do with the complexity of production, that backspring is master class but complex.

I think you missed his definition. Whittler.
