Well, once again the surgery's been postponed. She's not having it done today.

The DR's said her white blood cell count is too low. This means there is an infection 'somewhere'.They don't know where. They can't find it.
If they were to perform surgery now,the infection would take over & kill her.

Thanks to everyone for all the positive thoughts & prayers.

Dang it. When she is back in action sometime down the road, this whole thing will seem like a distant (and bad) memory. Until then, hang in there. We are pulling for her and for you to get this behind you so you can move on with life.

Just read all this to get caught up. It seems to me that it's time to get a second opinion. Unfortunately medical care in this country sucks, so you need to do some of your own leg work.

I'd find another gastrointerologist and also an infectious disease specialist. Post op infections are common, but need to be addressed properly.

Diverticulitis is a common gastro surgery with a very high survivability rate.

Regarding the dimentia you mentioned due to meds, it is called "sun downing" and although very upsetting, it is highly common and not a specific cause of concern for the patient other than mental anguish.

The bottom line is (without being aware of situation) the doctors need to figure out why her WBC is low before they administer any more antibiotics.

At this point since it has been months, she needs to be rescreened for cancer given the WBC. It is possible that the doctors missed a cancerous polyp in the bowel. She should also be screened for bone infection, and leukemia.

Again it is possible they missed a polyp or botched the test, but highly unlikely. It is far more likely that her immune system is reacting to the infection, and the docs just need a bit more time to prescribe the proper antibiotic. It is actualy a good sign that they are waiting, because if things were critical they would throw strong antibiotics at it immediately instead. Take a deep breath, and think positive.

Best of luck & prayers,

-Freq

I've been there and done that, bag and all. Happened to me about 7 years go took about 6 months to get it all back together and another 6 or 8 weeks after the last surgery to get my strength back.

Hope and pray for a great outcome.

Just caught up after being logged out for a month or two. I will continue to keep you two in my prayers and hope for a speedy recovery.

Pat had the surgery last Thursday(8/12) as planned. Her health has been "spotty" at best since.
I got a call from her surgeon at around 5am Wed(8/18) morning. They had to transfer her to the ICU in the middle of the night. Her blood pressure & heart rate were abnormal,& she was complaining of chest pains.

They did a cat scan & it showed a mass underneath the skin where they operated. The doctor told me they are going to stick a needle in there to see exactly what it is.She said if it's puss, that'll mean it's an infection & will be able to be taken care of with antibiotics.OTOH,If they find fecal matter, that means there's a leak in the intestine & they will have to operate(yet again!) immediately.
I don't know how much more she can take.:(

Please continue to keep us in your thoughts & prayers

Thank You

Sincerely, John & Pat
