The great thing about the Sharpmaker is that it works with just about any knife.

I use mine along with a kitchen steel as my main gear. A Lansky sharpener is used when the blade is completely trashed and I have a some diamond stones for field use. Those stones were compliments of @chuck4570.

I also have a Case Moonstone that I bought years ago and some stones that belonged to my father.
I don’t really think I need the sharpmaker yet. I will learn how to use the one @jlauffer gave me.

For now, I will save my money until something pops up. Who knows?

Talked to my parents last night, they said they would think about it.

However, they said if they did let me get one, I wouldn’t be able to clip it to my pocket, because I’m “showing off” and “letting everyone know I have a weapon”. They think I don’t respect it as a weapon... I do. :(

They also claim the reason why knife manufacturers put the clip on the knife in the first place, is so people can show off. That is SO not true.

You guys have any words that could help me here? Some examples of why a clipped knife is better?

I always thought the pocket clip was meant to keep the knife in place
instead of flying around inside your pocket like loose change.

some people do wear the knife with a clip to show off

But that isnt really the purpose of it...

I also read that you thought the SAKs were lame.
I grew up around cheap, dull slipjoints so I think
I get why you'd say that and i would like to change
your mind.Heres some Brands/Models of slipjoints or
traditional styled knives that you might like...

Nose grease?
Rub your finger over the top of corners of your nose, the finger picks up skin oils. This 'grease' works really well as an impromptu solvent of sticky stuff such as a blade may pick up when slicing packaging or even providing an oil coating for a carbon steel knife, albeit with a dose of 'yeuch' for the squeamish. :) Also works for filling the groove of a scratch in a CD/DVD or even more historically, photo negatives.

Maybe someone can enlighten me as to how a blade with a hole in it can be, "solid"...

Yes, but any blade with a hole in it for that matter.
Well... I guess it has to do with the spacing of the hole, and the edge. If the hole was to close to the edge, it may reduce the stability of the blade. But I guess the knife manufacturers have nailed down the science.:thumbsup:

Maybe the lock would break before the blade does. Better to have a fixed blade IMHO.

I agree.

I also feel that a knife makes a poor self-defense tool. I never want to get that close to my opponent. If you have to use a knife, both people go to the hospital. As a minimum.
I agree.

If you an adult, a concealed carry hand gun is a much better option.

I'm assuming that you mean a knife makes a poor 'primary' self-defense tool? My knife is a backup self-defense tool.

Yes... I think that’s what he meant. That’s what I meant.

That’s why I think Police should all carry bad up SDK’s, because if the crook is able to get his gun, or the officer has his hand over his preventing the crook from getting it, he is hopeless.

A small, fixed blade SDK is a great option IMO.

(That’s why I think the Ka-Bar Law Enforcement is such a great knife.)

No, I am saying it makes a poor self-defense tool. Period. I never want to be that close to my opponent.

Unless you have trained with a knife (and even then) it may be to your disadvantage carrying one for SD. You just have to get in to close to your enemy. A sidearm, rifle, shotgun, mace, pepper spray all have advantages over a knife. Of course, if a knife is all you have...

IMO, the best SD tool you have is you. How you walk, what you wear, how you generally carry yourself, all play a role in your defense. Who you pick as friends and what activities you choose (and when) can all play a role in your defense. So does how, or if, you speak to others.

I remember one time when I used to work as an armed guard. We had a fundraiser for a non-profit. The plan was to take the money from the event to the police station at the end of the evening. It would stay there until the bank opened the next morning. I had to explain to my companion that I was there to escort the money, not carry it. I had the sidearm, mace, and baton. His job was to carry the money. Sometimes security is in the little details.
