SAK: best-ever-most-perfect-ideal...?

Lol, I think we all want a whole bunch of tools but only a small size - the sak grail?! In lieu of that, I guess the next best option is to have at least 2 around, the useful chunky beast in a bag or pouch, and the little one in a pocket - good reason for getting more knives imo!

And ta guyfalks for saying about the alox scales not popping off, I assume you mean accidently with wear and tear? - I was sort of wondering abt that t'other day. I think one of the normal red scales on my champ is a bit loose, prob from being bashed abt in my bag for a few years - do you think that wouldn't happen with alox scales?

No...Alox scales are tough as 10 inch nails unless you do somthing to abuse it. Also the Cellidor scales are known to work loose over the years & in Temp extremes of hot & cold. A Swiss guy even admitted this as FACT with the Cellidor scales! Just pop them off & put a tiny bit of glue in each anchor hole & wrap tight in rubberbands or ductape overnight & you are good to go!

No, Alox scales are actually directly rivetted to the knife - they are the whole handle - there are no separate liners between the alox scales/handles and the rest of the knife.

Whereas the plastic/cellidor scales are actually popped-on press fit to the heads of the rivets that hold the knife together.....

Think of it this way the Alox handles are like very thick liners which have been finished and the rivets rounded.

Hopefully this picture may help to illustrate -

My perfect SAK would be a modified Troubleshooter (this was a Vic/ Marlboro Miles knife from the last few years. It is basically a Deluxe Tinker with a metal file).

I'd change the pen blade to a pruning blade and exchange the metal file for a woodsaw. I'd 'plus' the handles for fun, too.

Since that doesn't exist, I carry a Craftsman everywhere (will plus the handles later).

I think UnknownVT has covered what I was trying to say.

The models with the Alox scales are stiffer and stronger than those with the Cellidor scales, however, the Cellidor versions have always been strong enough for anything I ever did with them.

I currently have a Recruit with only the inner liner (the scales warped, probably due to excessive heat, and it bothered me so I popped them off and threw them away). Really not a bad knife without the scales; the only real problem with it is the protruding pins at each end snagging in my pockets. I plan eventually to use it as a guinea pig for learning how to take these things apart.

I think that the Victorinox OH Trekker is perfect, and the only thing that would make it even better is if they added a small 1.5" blade like on the Spartan for use around sheepies. If they got rid of the wood saw to do that, I wouldn't mind the addition of a nail file.

An Alox OH Trekker would be pretty sweet too.

My ideal SAK would be the Waiter, with a reamer, and alox Soldier-style scales (complete with the Soldier-style shield).

A One Handed Trekker with:
Unserrated main blade
Replace bottle opener with the universal can/bottle opener
Replace can opener with a small secondary knife blade
LED light embedded in scales
Recessed inlaid emblem on scales

... and a corkscrew instead of the phillips driver...

If Vic or Wenger ever did come out with the perfect, end-all, SAK what excuse would we use to keep buying more? You know honey, I needed this one because......:)

For me it's my Vic Mechanic. However, I do carry a Rambler on my keychain which gives me scissors and smaller phillips. But I could live with just the Mechanic.

Almost perfect except for size is my old Champion. This is the knife that is in the museum of modern art.

I will say that the ideal of a LED light, like on the Huntsman Lite, has its appeal. For basic carry at work I have just ordered an Explorer. For me the phillps screwdriver needs to be in line and not on the back to be really useful. Looking at it as a survival tool the woodsaw is a must, as is the magnifying glass (fire starting). The scissors fall way down on the list and the metal saw/file moves up. Add an LED light to my Champion, take away the Fish scaler and "plus" the handles and you got my ideal without moving into the 111 mm knives with their (sigh) locking blades.

well not quite there - but there was a short lived model sold mainly through Wal-Marts around 2003-5 that was the Champion Plus.

The Champion Plus added the "Plus" scales to the Champion -
but more accurately it is the SwissChamp withOUT the pliers since there are more tools on the backside than the original Champion......

If you have access to SOSAK - this thread discusses the difference between the original Champion and the Champion Plus -

My perfect SAK would include anything useful minus the tweezers and toothpick, to me the only thing they are good for is falling out and leaving 2 holes empty to collect dirt and pocket lint  Watch tonight ill get a splinter and something stuck in my tooth :foot:

Just two nights ago, the 'ol lady got a slinter from a drawer in her finger. Just a bit sticking out over the skin. Used the tweezers from my classic and got it out.

Once in a while the tweezers really do come in usefull!

Thanks to everyone for sharing your idea of your ideal sak, interesting to see what a range there is - and what similarities across the board too. Eyegor's comment ("If Vic or Wenger ever did come out with the perfect, end-all, SAK what excuse would we use to keep buying more?") is spot-on, and the only reason I can think too of why they don't offer total 'design your own' catalogues. Guess the only answer is a handful or 2 of various saks!

My perfect SAK!?

A red 91mm or Alox two layer frame with: large blade, nailfile with nail cleaner, can opener with small screwdriver, cap lifter with screwdriver and wire stripper, reamer (the one like those Alox ones), key ring, tweezers, toothpick and a Philips screwdriver.

If that was possible….
