One of my favorite pastimes this time of year was to sit on the deck, watch the fireflies and listen to the tree frogs with Lola. I've finally gotten around to introducing Elsa to this tradition...

It rained for most of the afternoon, so we just got back from a walk. Ordinarily this would be done with a Twisted Tea or other libation (my goal when I was doing utility work was to make it home within the guaranteed 4 hours pay on trouble jobs and drink a tall boy on "company" time), but since I gave up the booze in January of last year, my quart bottle of water has to suffice.

I use one of these on fatcat.

then regular cat wire type brush to get the loose stuff off.

it just pulls the dead hair out and won't let matting happen...once ya cut those spots out....

I have it from the long hair cat I had......never had a matting issue with her....

but ive always brushed cats daily. I dislike shedding hair everywhere
We have one of those, but found this one to be more effective, to the point our son actually caused a bald spot on our male cat's back that took a while to fill back in o_O. Good luck David! All the years I've had cats, they've all been short-hairs, so haven't had to deal with a long-hair.

Thanks John! That brush you have there, by the way, is the same basic design as the one I had brushed Smokey with for years, and he never had mats. I cut the handle of mine though, so I could palm it. Made it easier to reach all the spots, especially under his chin, which he really liked. I haven't been able to find that brush since the move.

I forgot to check the mailbox earlier today, but did just now, and these were in there. I didn't realize two came in the package:

Gonna try them out now but I really think it’s the jbmonkey style brush that will be the answer.

Hmmmm this flea comb actually holds some promise. If I go slow I can get some of the less developed mats, and I can use it on the tighter mats as a buffer between Smokey's skin and my Klein electrician scissors. That's playing the long game though.

That looks like what are used on our horses, kind of.

Update on Smokey: he’s still got mats but I gave him another wash after I got him the other day, but a less aggressive one. He’s back to his friendly self happily accepting brushing. I still have an actual dematting brush on the way in the mail, but mom is coming for dinner tonight and bringing me a “coat rake” she found at Walmart for me yesterday. Hopefully it’s more effective at untangling mats than the other stuff I’ve tried.

Sometimes a change of surroundings throws off pets, cats seem especially sensitive to changes. Many years ago, we moved with two cats, and they spent a good couple of weeks up on top of the kitchen cabinets. Sometimes it’s a few days, sometimes a few weeks, but they eventually come around. Glad to hear Smokey is feeling more like himself.

Please keep us updated. Thanks for being kind. 😭
Remember Robert?
It seems Robert is the problem, keeping in mind the loss of his wife.
It’s kind of a long story, so in short, Robert seems to have a habit of, cut & run.
We have the cat, Robert is in a motel, his sister shows up, takes him in, he eventually gets into an argument with her and splits on foot, as his truck is inop. Where abouts, unknown & not answering his phone. The cat is going to our daughter‘s business to live untill further notice. (It’s a good set up)
The only reason I’m telling this is, more proof..it’s the humans, not the animals

Seriously. You’re right. Thank you for the update and for taking care of that cat. I feel like there’s nothing sadder than a sad kitty. They’re such emotional little creatures. 😭

Holly.

Recently turned 8yr old and would have you believe that We live in HER house. Well, here she is in her tree in her room.
