Aw she looks so sad.

Speaking of sad… found this fella on my first day in the new place:

He must have been in there for a few weeks because he was light as feathers and bones when I took him outside. Or her. I wouldn’t know.

Can’t tell for sure in the pictures; the males have a bluish hue at the base of their beaks. The females are pinkish.

These are a few of my pet friends, I have one more crow, and 7 little birds. I made a small habitat for them outside my window about three weeks ago with a seed bird feeder, a suet cage, a hummingbird feeder, a wooden shelf/perch where I put scraps for the 2 crows, and a big water dish. After I put that water dish out there, the 2 crows hang out here throughout much of the day. They go find food around the neighborhood and then fly it over to here to eat next to their water bowl. The squirrel hangs out here most of the day now, and the little birds come in waves as they please haha.

We get an early morning call from one of our daughter‘s, crying.
It seems, one of her customers is in a bind. (Robert)
To set the scene: Some years ago, Robert’s wife passed and it derailed him. He went from a job, home, several family members, to living in community housing.
The story: One of the other tenants kicked Robert’s cat. It upset him so bad, he loaded up his truck and left. Now homeless, living in his truck, he is in Emily’s parking lot this morning.
We agreed to care for the cat, who may have some damage around his mouth. He won’t let us near him yet to see.
The plan: Our youngest daughter put Robert up in a motel untill he can get straightened out. According to Emily, his counselor (?) is going to visit him tomorrow (July 4th !!) for a welfare check.
Emily is going to make sure he gets to our place to visit his cat.
It‘s going to be a happy ending.

Here’s our old girl Gracie Lulu, just a few days ago. She gave us a scare last weekend and we were afraid it might be that time - she’s 11 1/2, and she started going downhill fast right after we lost our golden last year. A trip to the vet and a few new meds, and she’s starting to perk up again. No idea what she is, but there’s definitely some Shar Pei in there that has become more prominent in the last few years, though you can’t see the wrinkles too well in this pic.

She was literally rescued off the street - she followed my stepson on the sidewalk one day and wouldn’t leave his side, even though she could barely walk. Vet guessed at the time she was about 3 months old, with a recently broken hip that was maybe two weeks on the mend. She was a pathetic sight, but just a few weeks later she was doing all the things a puppy does. And now she’s an old lady, and I’m glad she’s still hanging on. She’s the last one, maybe ever - I don’t know if I’ve got it in me to do the puppy thing again.

Here she is the day she got brought home back in March, 2012, with her new big brother.

I said that right up until the first day I came home to no dog. The kids weren't here, and Ms. Wild Willie was still at work... I walked inside, fed the cats, and went back out to chip stone in the driveway for several hours until she picked the kids up and came home.

I started wheedling not long after that, she finally caved and did most of the adoption legwork herself knowing that my lack of impulse control would result in me just showing up with a dog at some point.

As soon as I heard Elsa's nails clicking on the linoleum the house finally felt right again. No she's not a replacement. I still miss both Lola and Cooper dearly, but life without a dog flat out sucks...

We went with a younger dog this time so the kids can have more time with her, but I've decided that in the future I'd like to bring older dogs in to give them a good last few years. It breaks my heart seeing the old timers up for adoption for whatever reason.
It sure hurts when you have to say goodbye, but in the long run it's worth it.

Glad to hear Gracie is on the mend, hopefully she keeps on trucking for the long run.

Reading posts on here gives hope for the world! Animals are awesome and the folks who take care of them are too! Thank you all for sharing.

We were just up at our remote cabin and had the dogs with us. Skeeters were horrible and attacked the dogs despite bandanas (necks and waists) with repellant. The squirrels were surprised seeing my wife as I am usually the only human around for miles and take them almonds. No moose or bears this trip.

You might be right. It’s been about 20 years now that there’s been a constant clickety-clack of doggy nails on the floor, and I’m not sure how I’ll handle it when that’s not there any more. I’ve thought about adopting too, but my wife is worried that we’d be picking up somebody else’s problem. They certainly do bring a special kind of joy into your life, there’s no question about that.

Adoption does present its own set of challenges, but one can also circumvent many of the less fun parts of an 8 week old puppy too. That being said, my whole family has been adopting dogs for years (mostly pitties) and as long as you do your part, the dogs are wonderful.
Cooper did take about a year to settle in, but he was 4 when we got him and he'd been through a lot. Including the death of his first owner. At the time we didn't have kids, so we were able to take on an animal with more issues. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, sure it's frustrating, but when you finally make that breakthrough there's nothing like it.

Please keep us updated. Thanks for being kind. 😭

Coolest thing today. We have four does and a young buck (about a year old, just getting his first antler stubs now) feeding in the yard at various times since last fall. Once in awhile all five would come in together, but usually it was three and two. At least two of the does were pregnant, and the last month or so we’ve only seen them one at a time, maybe two on occasion, so we figured they had delivered, and we were hoping at some point they’d bring their babies around. This afternoon one of the moms showed up with her fawn. Frisky little thing, gotta be only around a month old, running and jumping all over the back yard. Just amazing to see.
