Spyderco Positron

Can anyone who has one comment on the texture of the carbon fiber? Is it a polished smooth cf? I really enjoy the texture of my Spider Monkey and hope the Positron is similar.

It's smooth. I would estimate it was sanded with something between 1200 and 2000 grit on the sides, making it very smooth but not glossy polished. The underside edges have a slight sanded texture, they look and feel something more like 220 grit. Not a textured handle but not slippery polished either IMO.

KW told you it could be a couple of months?

Well not in those exact words..
From knifeworks "It will be a loong wait, unless spyderco decides to make a mass production of these, but worth the wait. This knife has such a high demand. There are quite a few order ahead of you, we still have pre orders to fill from end of August."

With all the knives and recent releases by the Taiwan factory.. That coupled with the large demand by pretty much every online retailer I don't see any large shipments in the near future to any one retailer..?? Could be wrong though.. I placed my pre-order October 3.. So I figured it would be forever before my order finally came up.. So I canceled it and placed it with CS because they didn't take pre orders for 4 months like kW and I didn't figure the wait would be as long.. We shall see though

I'm guessing the Positron would hold better in the hand without the clip...

Digging it so far

Received my Positron just now. It's a real nice little EDC flipper. Not perfect with pluses and minuses.

On the plus side, it's thin, narrow, trim and light (2.61 ounces). The blade is sharp, centered, no blade play. With FFG and 0.114" thickness it should be a great slicer. Flipping action is great even with the low profile flipper tab. The real CF is really well done and affords very good traction.

On the minus side, it's a little difficult to disengage the lock since there's not much room or better cutout. Although the handle length is 3.96" there's only 3.4" room for a grip. You can get a good grip but you need to bunch up your fingers real tight. Also, the bottom of the clip where the screw is does create a hot spot when gripping it tight which you kind of need to. Hate to have to remove the clip.

I'll carry it all day tomorrow and see how it goes.

Not personally a fan of flippers or smaller knives - but this one looks fantastic. Great little EDC blade.

Sal mentions (often?) that the market may be going towards the smaller end of knives - notice they pretty much stayed off the recent bandwagon of Ridiculously Overbuilt knives. They've always stayed true to their high performance roots. People tend to put what fits into their pocket (size, and more importantly, weight-wise), so the overly thick brinks of steel and carbon fiber stay at home in the safe.

I'd be in for one if Spyderco decided to send some 20CV overseas..... ;)

since some of you were asking about shots in hand - I have Med size hands

Thanks Acadian! Just waiting for Spyderco to send some more cutleryshopee's way!

I got lucky yesterday I got mine on its way from blade HQ. I been wanting a the original spyderco southard but when I seen positron with carbon fiber scales had to pick this up.

Wow, very similar actual grip length and cutting length. Looks like more girth on the Southard Positron though.
How does the weight compare?

I think the 0450 is about 2.9 oz and the positron is 2.6 so pretty close! Grip on the 0450 looks to be a little larger..?
