The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Sorry about that, I didn't know that was against the rules. And good to know the market is saturated, again, not knowing the brand (other than folks posting on BF), but reading through, they seem very desirable, so I assumed hard to get.
I really didn't mean to get on you about deal spotting, though I suppose that could apply. My post was intended to indicate the irony of spotting something that wasn't such a good deal after all.

Thanks for posting here in The Bears' Den. There's a lot to check out here and much to discover about these exceptional Russian knives going back through over 8 years' worth of posts.

Not long ago Knifecenter ran a sale on their inlay version of the Quantum Ursus and you never see new Shiro’s on sale at a dealer, the market is definitely full of Urus variants! Pretty safe to say they should end that line of knives and put focus elsewhere but I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a new color or wood inlay Ursus in another month 😁.
A few years back Shiro started featuring "budget" versions of models such as the 111, F3, and F95NL which helped broaden their market somewhat. Business-wise, they seem to have hit on something different than their usually more deliberate, individualized methodology with the Quantum Ursus, being able to knock out a great volume of them while still maintaining quality levels of F&F. Their market reach has broadened with more dealers now, those newer to the game all seemingly flooded with QU's. My guess is they'll keep it up until the market becomes saturated, then move on to greater production of another "populist" model.

At the same time, I hope/trust they'll keep producing their more premium versions of F-series, Hati, and 111 knives along with their more recent models in the same range--Astrum, Stellar, etc--as well as featuring the more basic versions of the Hati, F3, etc.

It is a little tired, though, to look on a dealer website and see QU's as 80% or more of what's available for Shiro's.

I've just checked the domestic web-site, 25 variations in stock — an abundance never seen before 2024:

Model
Variations in stock
Share
Quantum Ursus936%
Quant_i_um Ursus416%
Stellar3*12%
F3 (Alutex)312%
Hati Gen 32*8%
111 Gen 428%
F95NL Gen 51*4%
NeOn (Lite)14%

QU's are dominating and only 24% are "premium" (Stellar, Hati, F95NL).

It's more or less typical picture for Q4'2024, except for the Astrum being out of stock. Pretty sure it's going to re-appear after the New Year holidays (i.e. in a week or so).

Personally I used to be skeptical about Ursus line, but the recent variations (especially full-Ti Lefty / Righty) are not so basic anymore (featuring MRBS + internal millings) and remain rather affordable. And I fell in love with Quantium 3M instantly 🙃

UPDATE 2025-01-09: Astrum's back as expected :)

Speaking of Quantium... 🙃

Can someone share a few photos of the Astrum next to the f95nl ? How different do they carry ? Have a gen 5 and considering an astrum

My own overall impression — Astrum is a tiny bit longer and slimmer, but notably lighter. Hence it feels less bulky in my pocket and less robust in my hand.

If comparing Shiro and CRK products makes any sense, I'd say F95 ~ Sebenza, Astrum ~ Mnandi-on-steroids 🙃

Geometric distortion is minimal, safe enough to assume "what you see is what you get" (a 60mm EF-S lens on a camera with a 1.6x crop factor, i.e. 96mm on a full frame):

Are blades same thickness ?

Astrum's blade is ~3mm.

Recent variants of F95 feature ~3.5mm blade, but it used to be ~4mm for years.

I've just inserted the picture into my previous post.

If you have an option to handle Astrum before buying your own one, it might the the best way to go, given the mixed feedback from the folks accustomed to F95 / Hati / F3 models.

Thank you . Certainly tempting but have read the feedback that it’s hard to deploy. That has kept me thinking . That and the price tag . I’ll try to handle one at ccks in a few weeks

A few pages back a member mentioned that he simply had to lower is grip on the handles slightly and it deploys reliably. If memory serves.

I have F95's with 4mm blade stock and Astrums. In pocket the difference is not noticeable. In hand the Astrum feels much more elegant and thin. The Astrum makes the 4mm F95 feel very robust in hand. I do find the Astrum fussy to deploy (hands need to be free of lotion/oils and I have to use the lateral aspect of my 2nd digit). In contrast my 4mm F95's flip every time, even with them being framelocks and the Astrum being a tablock.

To echo some of the others - Astrum feels noticeably slimmer (blade spine to blade edge distance) in hand, and similarly when closed in the pocket it feels noticeably slimmer than the F95. Additionally the flipper tab size difference is a big differentiator in how easy it is to put stuff in your pocket "past" the knife - if you carry other stuff in the same pocket as your knife, the slimmer tab on the Astrum makes it much easier to get at.

Personally I run my knife front-right pocket, along with my phone/wallet - so that does end up being something that can make a difference. I think the slimness is a large reason why I was such a fan of the Astrum for so long. That being said I've gone back to the CDX (F95 size), so it clearly isn't a complete deal breaker.

111 Aerum is coming. Most likely this Saturday.

No information about the blade steel yet. I really hope for MagnaCut or something exotic. It would be a shame to see common Elmax in a "limited edition" elemental project again...

UPDATE: Unfortunately, the steel is Elmax again 🫥
