The Bears' Den--Shirogorov Showcase

Old school F95 Camo available on a secondary market website is quite tempting - even though I have no need of one and it's not my speed at all.

I seem to recall that run with the 4 variants being quite rare with few of each produced - 2 different types of Camo, Stone, and then Snakeskin as far as I recall? I might be misremembering one of those.

Do you mean those early Custom Division variants? 😃

According to Sergey Shirogorov the CD line was established in 2014, hence they are dated either 2014 or (more likely by the look of them) 2015-2016.

If I am looking at the same one he is, it is one of these (though this is not the knife for sale/in question above). M390 blade, no marking on the show side.

I've been looking at one on the secondary market that's been tempting me too. I really don't need another Shiro nor to spend the dough either as I can't imagine letting any of those I have go. I keep going back to look at it with mixed feelings, hoping at the same time that it's both still available and has finally been sold.

In the meantime, I carried my first two Shiro's to end the last week. The original is the knife in this thread's OP, some 8+ years back...

...the other followed not long after in its wake, as I'd struggled deciding between the F3 above and a different 111 that was available here on the Exchange. In the end I lucked out and made the right decision as I can't at this point imagine being without my Python and I like the 111 below much better than the one that sold to someone else.

I look forward to hearing your feedback in case you decide to try a Stellar against the odds.

It was a pleasant surprise for me to discover the noticeable progress of Shiro production knives in general, while the newest models (Stellar / Astrum) may still benefit from small design refinements.

Can any of you experts give an estimate on value for the Quantum Ursus? It was an impulse/fomo buy.

I’m far from an expert but I can say that values can be real tricky with collaboration or modded knives (from any brand). I haven’t purchased one of these base variants modded by another maker so I’m curious if they come in the original box, the collaboration marked boxes or if they come with any approved documentation from Shiro? Does the COA state that this Ursus knife was modded by John Barker?

Too lazy to get mine out, but another was actually just listed, so grabbed their pics. They come as a factory one would with box/coa/cloth. I know table is $1,300 if you win the lotto for one.

Does anyone know of a link here on BF that shows the different Shiro models and maybe explains the differences? Looking at several on secondary market but prices swing wildly. I’m not sure when someone lists one for $1200 if it’s just an entry model or when I find a $500 model if it’s a nicer model. I’ve seen both knives in question before list wildly at different prices.

I’d like to add one to my stable but just have room for one…. I’d like to be in the middle quality wise, I like bigger folders if that matters too? Thanks for any suggestions or links for me.

I think the Neon NL is an entry model but for instance I see one listed for $375. That a good deal to start?

As for the size variations, here's my older photo of 85 / 90 / 95 x 2 / 111 mm blades — NeON R20, Stellar, Hati Gen.3 & F3 Terrus, 111 Gen.5.1.

A 100 mm production model (Astrum) has been introduced at the end of 2024, but it's on a fancier side.

If you are looking for a big mid-priced folder, I'd recommend to consider a G10 version of 111 Gen.4. There were plenty of them made before switching to a premium CF-only Gen.5.1.

You might be lucky enough to find a very recent (2024) one featuring a ~3mm blade and Orange / Black / Olive G10 — AFAIK the table price was ~$850:

If you like larger folders, don’t mess with a Neon, go right for an F95, Hati (which is an F95 with a carbon fiber or other material than Ti show scale), or the F3 which is similar to those in size but it’s a liner lock knife with full scales so they are thicker handled. 🍻

A Neon NL for $375 is a smoking deal for what you get but that is the smallest of the "core" lineup of Shiros.

Others have provided some good info/visuals for size comparisons, and I'd agree that something in the F95/F3/Hati lineup would be an excellent introduction to Shirogorov for someone who likes big knives.

I'll also throw out there that in my experience, you'll get the best deal on Reddit. For some reason the KnifeCenter exclusives with orange/black inlays seem to be the least desirable and go for the lowest prices. Every once in a while you'll also see an older F95 with a micarta inlay for a very fair price and they are excellent knives.
