The "I've Been Here a Year and I Appreciate You" GAW ***WINNERS ANNOUNCED***

Darren, I've thoroughly enjoyed your presence on the Porch. Your enthusiasm is infectious--whether you are making photoshop mockups, making phone calls to dealers and giving folks information about upcoming runs, or making lightning fast snags on the exchange, I'm constantly impressed by your creativity and stamina.

I've certainly been a recipient of the Porch generosity and kindness, so rather than put an entry in for myself, I'd like to nominate @Buzzbait for whichever knife he would prefer to have.

Thanks for giving back, and even more for being a member of BF and the Porch.

I would like to win the 78.

I don't know anyone in real life who collects traditional knives, so this place was my introduction to others who collect old fashioned cutlery. That makes it special to me. I'm not the biggest poster by a long shot, but I read 90% of the threads on here.

Generous giveaway, thanks for the opportunity.

Please put my name in for the #73 Scout, this is very kind of you.

For myself it’s not anything life changing but life reminiscing, at the age of 64 traditional knives have been a way of life since the age of 8 when my grandfather gave me a little single blade Old Timer. Almost every since that time I have at least one and mostly 2 traditional’s have been in my pocket. I have given or put aside many knives for my kids and grandkids in hopes of keeping this interest going. There is just something right about the looks and feel of a traditional knife that brings back memory’s, all good, that keeps me coming back to this place.
Love hearing about folks passing down to their kids, grandkids, etc. There is something special about getting your first knife...something we never forget! Thanks for your entry and good luck

Awesome GAW Darren. I'd be happy with caring for either knife but lean towards the 78 for some reason. I originally came to bladeforums to learn about these sharp things I seemed to have a profound interest in, they should be sharp imo. After a short time I found the traditional forum qnd it's been history since. I really don't venture anywhere else but this traditional forum and that's mainly bc of the easy going atmosphere and the people here who make this place as excellent as it is. I've been here since the start of the Charlow's and it's been amazing to own a few of them amongst others. I will say the Tc Barlow's and BeerScout's are my favorite along with basically any of the #15 patterned knives. What a small world that I happen to be entering your Gaw. I happened to recently let a few knives go and Darren happened to be the guy that picked up that nice lightweight T.A. Davison I had. I didn't know anyone from this forum had picked her up but i happened to be scrolling through the "What traditional are you toting today thread and low and behold there it was in all its blue lightweight glory. It made me happy to know the knife went to a good home and a fellow member here. Anyways just thought I would throw that lil story in since it makes this Gaw that much cooler for me to enter. Thanks again at the chance pal!
Yes it is a small world! When I picked up that knife from you it didn't even occur to me that you might also be on BF. I need to start keeping a cross-reference sheet so that I know who everyone is on all platforms :) I've been admiring Todd's work for a long time but didn't think I would ever own one of his knives simply because they are way out of my comfortable price range and I normally don't buy from someone I don't know somehow. But I couldn't pass up the opportunity you presented and I am very glad I took the leap! It is everything I imagined it would be and then some. The problem is now I want another one haha. Thanks for the great deal and for entering the GAW...good luck

Great GAW and you've been industrious this past year :D

What this place gives me is simple but vital: chance to discuss, give advice and learn. Just can't do this about knives in my day to day life.

Excellent knives on offer, I'd like to put in for the 73, Barehead & that Bone:cool: BUT if I win I will nominate somebody else as I have quite a few knives already;) But to whom is a secret for now:D

Regards, Will
Thanks Will :) That secret someone is going to be excited if they win! Good luck

Thanks Joshua I appreciate you brother! Good luck

Another good point...not many of us know others in person that collect traditional knives. It is not something that is obvious without getting to know someone. I keep waiting for the day when I am out somewhere and I see someone pull out a traditional knife and I get to say "...dude...is that a <INSERT KNIFE KNOWLEDGE HERE>?" Talk about instant bonding with a stranger! You are in good company here for sure we are all knife knuts :) Thanks for your entry and good luck

It's not traditional, which is why I didn't mention it earlier. It is a walnut scaled Lone Wolf T2 Ranger. It isn't traditional, but the wood scales give it a traditional flavor that seems to put folks at ease even when I pull out a big modern folder. My usual pairing is that T2 and the 2015 forum knife, the Canal Street shadow pattern knife. They make a great pair with both having good grain and bolsterless exposed pivots. Even with all the wonderful toys I have, it is a hard pair to beat.
I am very familiar with that knife and HUGE fan of Bill Harsey's designs. I don't ever bring it up here because this isn't the correct forum but my favorite fixed blade of all-time is a Harsey (Gerber Big Rock). Coincidence, I just happened to post a photo of the Lone Wolf I won (from you!) in a GAW here in the coin thread :) I love that knife and carry it quite often.

Thank you for your generosity, and you seem like a great member around here from the posts I've read.
I could see myself using either knife but I have acquired a few too many knives recently and still have one or two I've barely carried if at all.

I will say that the porch really got me into carrying traditional knives, there was always some appeal in the simpler aesthetic and nature of them but I never really carried them.
With my found love of traditional knives I feel like I've matured more, I'd no longer think of testing my brother or cousin to see who can get their knife out the fastest or who's makes the loudest thwack.

Honestly this is just a great place with lots of great people, there are things to disagree on, but generally here it's more civil because we all love collecting and or using traditional knives.

A very generous GAW Darren .
I discovered the Forums when I was searching for where to buy some new Barlows . Since then I have discovered that there are a lot more nice knives other than Barlows . I also have a few more friends now than I had ever had . Some of them Electronic Friends and some of them that I have been able to actually meet . I much prefer the 73 and I think that I have one just like it except that it is a Left Hand version . If I am lucky enough to win it please give it to my friend AmirFleschwound . I don't think he has one like it .

I’m in. I would love the 73. I’ve always wanted one but they are hard to come by. I discovered the forums researching edc options like my father has always carried. I have enjoyed everyone’s stories and pictures over the last couple years. Jackknifes’ stories are a real treasure as well. Thank you for the great give away!

Wow, has it only been a year? It feels like you’ve been a valued member here for longer than that, Darren.

Not an entry for me, but The Porch has definitely touched my life. I’ve learned so much from people who are generous with both their time and knowledge. I’ve met people who I consider to be friends even though we haven’t had the pleasure of meeting in person. And, I’ve also been fortunate to be the recipient of some of that famous porch generosity with gifted knives as well.

Another member once described The Porch to me as a “special corner of the internet” and I couldn’t agree more. I’m glad you’ve pulled up a chair here and look forward to your contributions to come.

Thank you sir I appreciate that

Thanks Harry generous of you to nominate @Amir Fleschwund...good luck

Very generous of you.

Not an entry.
Thank you sir

I've heard, from more than one person, that @jackknife 's stories are one of the main reasons they are into traditionals (and Peanuts!). Thanks for your entry and good luck

I couldn't resist commenting; I own a T2 in walnut.
I bought it new in 2005 and carried it daily until 2012.
I used it so much that I wore the liner lock out; it'll close like a slipjoint now, lol!

I recently took it apart and am trying to repair the hollowed out tang area of the blade where the lock engaged. I'm building up that part with JB Weld. We'll see how it works.

Anyway, a great knife. Just had to comment.
(Now back to our regularly scheduled traditional programming)

An incredibly generous giveaway!

This forum means a lot to me as well. I am not in the best if medical health these days, so coming to this forum was first out of doing research for a hobby, then it became a big part of my social life, and now I've made some great friends!

I would pick the #73.
I have also been on the receiving end of generosity here, so if I win, please give it to someone who has shown much generosity here as well, Dave @dc50 .

Thanks!

Darren, this is very generous of you. I have certainly enjoyed your input on the Porch. I will put in for the #73, but not for myself. I would like to nominate my friend David, @Misplaced Hillbilly, to receive the knife if I win.

Discovered BladeForums, and more specifically, "the Porch", when I was researching pocket knives last year. Enjoyed the discussions and decided to join. It's a great place to relax, especially at the end of the day, and share pictures, information, and stories with friends from all over the world. I like that we can come together although we are from vastly different backgrounds. Right now, I am planning to retire to my literal back porch with some bourbon and a cigar, and my iPhone so I can catch up on some threads here.

Vince

Very generous of you! Thank you very much.
I can’t resist that #73.

The Porch is really a breath of fresh air in today’s world. Great people who all have a love & mutual respect for traditional knives. It’s amazing what I have learned here. Not just about traditional knives, but the people who carry them. I will probably never meet most the people here, but they make you feel like family. Your GAW is the essence of what makes this place so great. Truly a great place to hang out.

Thank you Darren for all you have given and continue to give to the porch. From day one you have been kind, thoughtful, eager to help and very generous. You are appreciated my friend. Great knives you are giving away! This is not an entry as I have won HUGE the past 12 months. Good luck to all!

Edit - I forgot to answer your request. I found this place while looking for sodbuster history. Trevytrev's thread. The porch had a tremendously soothing and calming effect at an emotionally tumultuous time dealing with my ailing father. I have discovered in this place an oasis. Knowledge, Kindness, A Museum of Traditional Cutlery, Friendship and limitless generosity.

I'd be in for the 78.

I ended up coming onto the Porch because one of my friends directed me here. J. Oeser, a great custom maker.

He was the first Bladeforums member I actually met in person, and a great guy, and amazing maker.

I've made plenty of friends on here, in multiple countries.

This sub forum has really brought my knife collection and use full circle. Back to the slipjoints of my youth! I appreciate the slipjoints and fixed blades I inherited from my grandpa.

Whoosh... I'm a long winded poster and this is gonna bring that out so um ya know... :)

I've always been a knife guy. Always. I've been known in my family as the knife guy since I was the knife kid. I'm also a function over form guy and appreciate practicality. So, while I did wade into the modern knife world, it was still with that bent. Too many super steels and horrible blade grinds and spiffy flipping action and razzoo scales and the strongest lock ever and ... Bluck! When did knives not become knives?

I've been on "forums" of all the various iterations since the 90's and for many years moderated a large firearms forum. I loved that forum and those guns and so many people there and actually often posted about knives but...That ended up going nuts with a sale of the forum and some fellas started up a small forum but my computer crashed and time and life and well...I was sans forum for awhile.

I'd visited BF over the years but just never settled in. I've always felt like something of an outcast in the knife world since all the latest trends didn't appeal to me. But eventually I joined and started dipping my toe in.

Then, in my frustration with all the offerings out there that just didn't fit my desires for a casual EDC knife, I posted here to the porch. I was all a-skeeeered of slip joints. I am by no means a lock snob but a slip joint? Man, I just couldn't take the leap and more or less said so. Well, that thread sparked some good conversation and I jumped in.

And wow, I've got a passel of Traditionals sitting next to me now. Some are back locks and the rest slippies. I've fallen in love with Case's offerings as they drive right down my highway. But I've also got a soft spot for French knives and although I only own one, I'm saving up for more.

I am having so much fun with these knives right now! Blade shapes, single blades, same-end or opposing-end blade options, how many blades(?), small, medium, large, carbon or stainless, what scale material, and on and on...

This is what I've always been searching for.

I love the pictures and the inputs and the kindness.

For weeks I've been pondering a post about the intangible value of these knives.

I've been blessed more than I deserve this week so I won't enter for myself.

There are so many great folks here that one feels hesitant to mention any specific names for fear of not mentioning others equally deserving.

I'd like to nominate Prester John Prester John for the first one. He's always here with likes and nice comments and great pictures and well... John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara? That breaks all the ties.

Thank you everyone.

:)

Very generous Gaw. I enjoy spending time on the porch mostly perusing and the people here are second to none. It can really renew your faith that there are still a lot of good people in the world. I would like to nominate redsparrow please.
