Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

SVORD Peasanty (Full Size, New Zealand, custom wood handle made by the previous owner, J Just Tom. )
Bergamasco (Italy)
MAM (Portugal) (equipped wth an "INOX" blade. ☹️)
Higo no Gami 10 (Japan) (Please note: I have seen online the correct spelling is three words, not one.)
In common:
Inexpensive. Light Weight. Capable. Friction Folders with no 🤬🤬🤬 blade lock. Wood Handles. Sharper than all my Ex's tounges.😳
Exclluding the MAM, Blades can patina. If during my lifetime MAM ever makes them with carbon steel blades again, I will get the same two models I have in "INOX". (1 MAM not shown. These are just what I are totin'.)
All but the MAM were gifts, so I an a little hesitant to post here. However the two gentlemen who sent them said they qualify for this thread. I will take their word for it.... 😁

Trust me, EVERY knife I own or could have possibly sent you qualifies for “Thrifty Thursday”. I’m really happy to see them pop up here.

This is one of my favorite threads and usually I'm excited to show something cost efficient and awesome.

Today isn't one of those days. This is not awesome. I've had this for a while and it almost kept me from enjoying the excellent Rough Ryder folders. Luckily I read afishhunter afishhunter and others posts about the RR folder goodness and tried them anyways.

This Rough Ryder Rr1636 looked decent in the listing photos.

For under $15 and free shipping I decided to give it a shot. I love a leather stacked handle and it was small enough to carry around.

When it arrived I just laughed. Welp... This wasn't shown in the listing photos.

At first glance it has all of the makings of a decent knife. Leather, nice brass fittings and a cool design.

I have no issues with China steel but when it says Pakistan you know it's going to be a special kind of junk. It is too.

The edge of the blade was comically thick. I thinned it as best I could but it just doesn't want to be a knife. You can get a bit of a sharp edge and if you look at it hard enough it's dull again. The sheath is probably thick paper dipped in plastic.

The handle could be good with a little work. I guess that is a plus. It would be a decent knife to hammer through small logs... This batoning is quite a selling point these days I suppose. 🤪

Oh well, they can't all be winners. Rough Ryder folders get a big thumbs up. Rough Ryder fixed blade knife shaped object gets two thumbs down.

RickHuf RickHuf Sorry about your disappointment but when I look at the big Rough Ryder site the blade is clearly stamped and the country of origin is in the specs. What happened?

Thanks for pointing that out I just went and looked. I wasn't looking at the RR website when it was bought, though. All of their knives are made in China and it never crossed my mind that this one wouldn't have been.

Definitely my own issue that I didn't look into this knife enough before purchasing it. It's just strange because they've created many nice folding knives with great covers and patterns and went with this thing for the fixed blade.

Looking at the site, they do offer some other good looking fixed blades. The first one that comes up is a great little pocket dagger in 440 from China. Hmm... 😁

A couple of my thrifty go-to users:

Where did you find the one on the top?

Haha, I honestly didn’t remember, and had to search my emails for that info.

It was from a Spanish seller I don’t think I can mention here. If you search for “Pallares Gabacha nº2 Carbon“ you can find a few sellers, but I can’t vouch for any of them. The Pallares Solsona website has a link to their catalog, but no online sales.

Thank you. That is a nice looking blade design.

My uncle had sent over a B-day card with a $25 Amazon gift card inside. I love new socks so it went towards a nice pack of them.

After finding the right ones, there was about 7 bucks left on the card and I got the bright idea to purchase the first thrifty pruner to scroll across the screen, just for poo's and googles.

For $11 and some change total, we have the Linsen Outdoors two bladed garden knife today.

Stainless liners, bolsters and blades
Rosewood covers
Made in China

A nice midsized hawk and a coping (budding?) Blade

For the price these folks nailed it. The blades are razor sharp and centered. There are no gaps in the springs at all and you can not see any light through them while holding it up to a bulb. Springs flush in all positions including the half stops. The hawk has a stronger pull and very snappy. The coping blade has a fairly weak pull.

The covers are crudely finished but look at that wood. It's beautiful. Listed as just Rosewood.

Pros:
Mostly well assembled
Sharp
Snappy
Attractive

Cons:
No way to attach leather fob for side pocket carry.
Minimal finishing.
Coping blade wiggles a bit, hawk blade is perfect
Covers could have been fit a little better
I feel like the blade length in relation to the handle is a bit short.

Most of these issues shouldn't be a problem to fix, so I'm going to get my money's worth of fun out of this over the weekend and turn this $11 knife into..... An $11 knife that I spent way too much time on.

Have a good day everyone!

That's a very handsome knife, Alan! :thumbsup::thumbsup::cool:
And it looks festive, too, to help you celebrate the Yankees' perfect game last night! 🤓

Thank you. I don't need a knife to celebrate. I've been a fan since 1958. For a team that's historically been known for hitting they have 4 of the 24 perfect games. The most by any team. And, all 4 pitcher's first names start with the 4th letter of the alphabet "D." How's that for a little math?

Fun facts I didn't know; thanks for the info, Alan!:thumbsup::cool:
