Thrifty Thursday... Cheap Traditional Knives

Which is?
Here’s the link to a YouTube video that has worked for me on this knife and several Cases.
I am not tech savvy so I hope this works 🙏
Just be patient when you do this process. It works. If you’re worried do what I did and try it out on a knife that you won’t mind f-ing up.But it hasn’t happened to me yet.

Thanks, but it looks like the cure is worse than the disease. 😬

I’ll admit the guy in the video is a little quirky but I’ll be dammed if it doesn’t work. The only mistake I’ve made was using the brass side of my double sided hammer once. Needless to say I’ve never done that again. Go for it!

I think the best thing he said was at the end. Don't try this on a knife that means a lot to you.

For me the fact of the matter has been that the only knives I’ve needed to do this on have been mostly Case knives. They are notorious for having off centered blades. So far it has worked on every one I have that were not centered. I have found that as long as it has a bolster it works. I’ve never had a GEC or any other quality factory knife that’s needed it.

as long as the blade clears the liners and as applicable the neighboring blades, how does an off-center blade affect the functionality of the knife?
Forgive me, but I can't see how a blade that is not centered, as long as the liners and neighboring blades (if applicable) are cleared, is an "issue" or "defect".

Sorry. I'll shut up and go away.

My first Old Timer. Other than the blade being off center it’s a cool little knife imho. Did my blade centering trick and now it’s dead centered.

I like your Schrade 19OT Land Shark. I've had one like it for several years; yours has a newer version of the shield than the plain old oval with OLD TIMER inside it. Do you have any idea if the "1022" on your tang stamp is supposed to be a "birthdate"? I have a Schrade 5OT that I bought earlier this year. It has the new shield and also has a 4-digit number on the tang stamp. I wondered if maybe it was manufactured in November of 2022.

As for your blade centering trick, I wasn't at all surprised when you posted the video. That's the kind of technique that I think would appeal to you bikers who like to "live on the edge"! 🤓:thumbsup: I'm too risk averse to try that method.

GT thanks! After seeing yours a few times I decided to try one out. I’m not sure about the tang stamp. As for the centering method it’s easy to do. It has worked every time for me on mostly Case knives. Which is why in the past I didn’t collect more of them. The only mistake I made was not paying attention and using the brass end of the hammer once. It works!

A Rough Rider splitback whittler. A nicely made knife. Plastic mailers are no match.

I love that whittler and was actually using it as a lathe graver a few days ago on some 3/4" walnut.

Ive since grabbed some different hss gravers at harbor freight, but the RR whittler did a great job.

I've never seen the custom shop thing. Looks like fun!

Good-looking RR whittler, Mike. I like Rough Rider's jigged red bone.:cool::thumbsup:

My thrifty pick this week is a RR Eureka stockman with red bone covers, but a different shade of red that I don't like as much as that on Mike's whittler.

Thanks Gary :)
I have the same whittler in greenish/blueish smooth bone, and its quite attractive, but the red jigged is my favorite 🤩

Here is a chunky sucker for the thrifty Thursday.

CEM sheepsfoot from Italy. Nice blade shape and size. 3/4" tall x 3 1/8" long. Stainless. Looks like about 3/32" stock but I'm using a yardstick so it's somewhere under 1/8 and over 1/16

Handle is about 4" long but then we have the handle thickness. This thing is every bit of an inch thick! I want to sand the sides flat everytime I pick it up but I'm not sure how that pivot is put together. The wood is very nice, some sort of rosewood.

Overall its a good one if you like a thicker handle! Definitely built as a utility knife.

Here is my cheapo Italian work knife:

Mine is carbon steel and not so broad across the back. The wood was about the same color as yours, but I stained it. It gets used quite a bit for projects around the house, the punch more than the blade even.
