Traditional French Fry day

10.5cm closed, so a smidge over 4".

I use my ironwood "le pocket" for picnic's and such.

Good choice. I have an ebony le pocket.

This is strange and not typical for FP. You didn't tell Yann about that?

I have 8 of their knives and several have come with issues such as damage or cracks to the covers, uneven grinds etc. I did send one knife back on warranty and it was fixed but it cost $50 in shipping. Couldn’t really be bothered doing that for any others. I like French knives but I’d choose other brands going forward.

One of my boys knives came with this deep gouge in the handle. Not sure how that made it out of the shop.

They are otherwise very nicely designed knives and some are well done.

Hmm, that's really weird.. I always thought FP was one of the best French manufacturers. Some of the defects can be attributed to handwork, of course. But that's too much. If you're still interested in the French, I'd recommend you look at brands like Forge de Laguiole (they have the sexiest click) and Laguiole en Aubrac (if I'm not mistaken, they have their own store in the US) and also Claude Dozorme. Good luck.

I’m in Australia, I tried to get a forge de laguiole once but I don’t believe they ship here. I do love French knives, my grandfather emigrated from Chambéry many years ago so I have a soft spot for French knives (and Opinel!)

Oh, so cute. So, french knives are not just fashionable things for 😉. Unfortunately I can't say anything about the presence of French knife brands in your area. I was in the Cook Islands last summer. There was nothing worthwhile there.

That's disappointing. You were a very good customer, and the fact that you ordered custom initials should have been a clue that they were dealing with a special knife that merited extra care. They really dropped the ball on that

I'm carrying this one for French Friday.

And again it's Friday. I have quite a lot of French knives, but I decided to post them little by little once a week to warm up interest in the topic. Today I am posting two legendary primitive knives from the Cognet company. The Montpellier knife is a close relative of the Capucine. The model already existed in the 18th century and was very popular with sailors in the south of France. I think that there is no point in commenting on the Douk-Douk

Montpellier & Douk-Douk from Cognet

Very nice Lag. This is not a very common brand. How do you like the quality? It looks very decent.

Thank you A Arie Leib . I received it a couple of years back as a Father's Day present. Quality is pretty good, not as nice as an FdL, FP, or LeA, but I have nothing to complain about. It's an 11cm size, but an easy carry due to the lack of bolsters.

Carry it for joy. it's a great memorable gift from children

Mine are not fancy but I picked up thiamine from knives of france, I like it. IMG_0849.jpeg

Edit: I like this one as one I can afford it and I couldn’t quite afford the Le 125 by the lady knife maker. I was working with someone here to get one but it didn’t work out, which is ok as I found some more French patterns and collected a few, I do have to credit Stefan Schmalhaus videos wirh really peaking my interest in French cutlery. The videoss were stylish and yet informative and entertaining.

I found Du Barry good when ordering something "special" but not hugely expensive.
The owner is happy to communicate and accept any reasonable requests, sent sample pictures of material etc.
They seem more comfortable in French, but are able to communicate in English too.
I have around 7? of their knives ranging from around 80 to several hundred Euro and they are consistently good working knives. 4 have some sort of customisation. Their knives do not have a lot of "polish" though, if you like really nicely finished knives.

My very first Laguiole was from Barry (?) cutlery I found years later,,,,if I have the right maker. I got it at a pawn shop when I first learned about French cutlery.

I have asked before, I also have a thing for small fixed blades, so I would love to see some French fixies, even smaller ones or just some EDC’s. Everyone have a good weekend.
