Alone Season 2

That red tide was a game changer, mussels are a great easy source of protein. There was a life time worth at Tracy's beach and there were even other shellfish thrown in. Clams were also visible on that beach.

It really makes you think.
In an actual survival situation, I would have seen all that food and started eating it.
And then I might have totally died...

Yes unless you knew about the red tide beforehand but let's say you didn't you would be dead pretty fast.

I honestly didn't get if Tracy is a feminine man or a masculine woman.
but what's the point of casting such a bag of fat? he/she could easily survive months without eating and doing nothing.

You are, of course, free to sign up for season 3 and show the world how it's done. :p

While it is possible that they threw in a ringer, I doubt it. Its not needed, and why have him bail out so early?
I honestly think he got into his own head on that one, and didn't have a squadmate to take him out of it. He was bucking wood into nice little blocks, thats a guy who's on autopilot, not someone planning his moves. He freaked out and tried hanging a bear bag with the only line he thought he had, 40lb test mono. But it looked like he was trying to hang more than 5lb of gear. Even then, taking knots into account, its not that hard to see that he was at a disadvantage. As I said last season, Fear does weird things in people's heads. Its skills plus mindset that will get people through. He may very well have the skills, just didn't get to show it.

From what I understand, red tide will be resident in the shell fish for a period of time after the water is clear, so I would bet that they have some indicator that it will be safe to eat. A standard slow taste test (skin, lips, tongue, consume) should let you know it was safe, I'd think. Its a neurotoxin, so you should get tingling if you taste it. But that's just my guess. If part of the way through they can start eating the shellfish, that could really push some change, and if they know that that they just have to make it 10-14 days say, then that could really help the mental state.

hahaha well yes Tracy could win, no doubt here. seemed courageous. and regarding myself, being a nationalsocialist doesn't change one thing in this thread. I don't talk politics on a knife forum.

I too was a little bummed to see the big guy tap out before even attempting a single night. They obviously edited in a lot of his tough guy "Army Strong" talk because they knew the outcome they had to work with. But I say that carefully as an armchair quarterback. If I were in that situation, I'd probably be in the fetal position whimpering like a baby. [emoji16]

People are Strange, When You're a Stranger....

Say what you want about Tracy, she has set up the best shelter and seems quite comfortable even with bears looming out side of her camp. And not a bad campfire to boot. I think she has encountered a lot of adversary in her life so this is just one more of those things she will need to overcome. It will be interesting to see the insertion of the next set of Aloners.

that's true, best fire and good first shelter. I'd like to see someone building a semi-permanent shelter at least

Yes, Tracyt seems to take the bear situation in stride. Also, getting a good fire is impressive as in Season 1 many had great difficulty in getting a fire.

I'm surprised that the guy tapped out within the first few hours. He should have brought his Spiderman PJs, they might have strengthened his resolve.

I'm betting the female from Alaska will tap out shortly due to her shelter design. Also, I can't figure her reasoning on that truck wheel size skillet.

You may be right. Last year I thought this show was pretty authentic but not so sure now. I mean, out of all the (presumably) thousands of people that applied to participate for the show, this guy was one of the top ten most qualified?? He couldn't even hang a bear bag.

The pre-season episode said 3,500 people applied, they took a bunch of them into some kind of woodsy area to "test" their skills to come up with the final 10 for the season. It's certainly possible, even likely, that they didn't actually pick the best, most capable 10 out of that group. It's a TV show, they want drama, I wouldn't be surprised if they picked some they knew would crack quickly - notice they put them on Vancouver Island but never seem to pick any contestants from the Pacific NW who might be used to the cold/wet/gray weather.

You know the last thing they would want are 10 people who could live indefinitely out there.

I think you're right there. Hopefully there's at least a couple out of the ten that will show how it's done. Would be great to see some real survival skills. Shelter building, food gathering. Dealing w black bears, wolves, cougars. Hope to see some wild life and learn something interesting. Just have to get through the drama.

This is about the red tide, got a question. Some of you guys from the gulf may know.

I understand the whole red tide thing, but I seem to remember an issue years ago, like twenty, maybe thirty. Red tide hit somewhere and the oyster beds were covered and they just moved the oysters to a different bed until they washed themselves out.

Couldn't she just move the muscles to the fresh water in the creek to let them wash themselves out?

Seems like it would be like soaking a bucked hide to get the lye out in running water or a large pond, just a thought. With that much food laying there it would be a game changer.

We have muscles here (Ohio) but unless you're a raccoon you cant eat them because they are protected.

Some of shellfish will store the toxin for up to 2 years.

Makes me think of Season 1 after Lucas got sick from eating clams.

What is it people like about Tracy's shelter, that it is easy to put up for the first night and she has a good fire in front? I can't really remember seeing a good shot of it, just a short shot in the dark. I think that a lean-to done properly will have a lot of mental benefit, and she dealt with animal sounds very well.

Her mentality is spot on, that's what I noticed about her.

Bears are a way of life on the island. Kids learn to watch out for the bears on the way to and from school. Usually if you look at a clearcut long enough you'll see a bear. Took this short video a few years ago.

If that guy who dropped out after seeing bear poop only knew he'd be kicking himself

the muscles won't open in fresh water, they just lock shut, as they can't really regulate their salt levels in the fresh, or so I'm lead to understand. Most salt water creatures can't handle fresh water. Bull sharks can, but that will be for the contestants of Alone, Australia Northern Territory!
