Ken Erickson Knives: A Retrospective

Yes, please tell us how you conjured up that bolster, Ken!!

I know the Remington pattern is flush with the Bolster! I'm sure Ken's is as well.

Jason

Jason,
The example I have has a raised portion for the angled grooves.

Here is a set of pictures that should illustrate pretty well. After grinding the radius's I clean things up with 220 grit. I cut the first groove in with a tri-cornered needle file. I then use my MMC checkering head that is powered by a Foredom motor and flex shaft. The MMC checkering head is a wonderful tool designed for checkering wood gunstocks. I had it left over from my gunsmithing days and have found it to be a great tool for "threading" bolsters. The MMC has an adjustable guide that sets the spacing and follows the preceding cut. The carbide cutter has shown no signs of wear cutting 410 or 416 ss.
After I cut the grooves with the MMC I clean up with needle files and sandpaper.

Thanks for the questions and comments guys! I did have a chance to mill the bolsters/frames and happy to report that the overall thickness is within .005 of the Remington! .005 undersize no less :). I still have much finish work yet on the bolsters to refine the file work etc, but happy with the results. The bone is in the vacuum jar, swedges are roughed in, all in all it is starting to resemble a knife.

Uh oh!!!

I am really happy with the covers! This is as close as I am able to achieve with my skill set to replicate the bone that is on the Remington.
What do you guys think about the shield? Go with this one, or use something different?

The bone looks fantastic, Ken.

As usual. :)

Not to nitpick the choices of whomever designed the Remington(!), but for me that particular shield-- which I like, in isolation-- fights the other lines of the knife to some degree instead of complementing them. To my eyes, it doesn't 'flow' with the other elements, including the bolster detail, and its points aren't echoed anywhere else on the knife.

(You asked. :o)

The color of that bone is as close to perfect as I'll ever see with these eyes. Warm and inviting with red, orange and sienna highlights. Superb!

Sarah, it could not be better stated. You nailed it! IMHO. You are good:cool:

Ken, I think more elongated would be better suited to the lines of this knife. Or, a diamond would look great. I know this is not a DE but if no engraving inside the diamond I think it would work.

As Sarah, Brad and others have said, the shield on the Remington just doesn't look quite right; however, I think you should leave the final decision up to whoever it is you're making it for.

I think a slightly elongated football shape would look great, like a marquise cut gemstone, only a little longer.

I did ask and you have confirmed my suspicions about this shield! :) I did not want to sway the outcome of this little informal poll.

Thanks, I was very happy with the color this bone took. Every piece of bone reacts differently it seems, but this came out the way I had envisioned.

An elongated oval (football shaped?) works well with this knife and Remington did use quite a few ovals on many different patterns.
What do you guys think about the "bullocks" shield? I am not tooo much of a fan of that shield for various reasons, but it may work well on this knife.

I truly appreciate everyone's feedback! Thank you .

I think the oval would look great, my biggest problem with the shield that's on the original is that it seems too small that it looks like it was an afterthought.

I think the bullocks shield might work (and I'm not a huge fan of it either), it always looks better on a bigger knife.

I think a long oval or even a bar would look great on this one. Something long and not so angular.

I decided , after making up a few different shields to go with the bullocks shield.

These are the three knives headed to the Northern Lakes Knife Co. show in Janesville Wi next weekend.
