Maybe we should trade some work :) I'd love a wood with a different wood bolster for my southard.
I could make you a cf one for yours

Just throwing out some ideas

Hey guys,

OK, I died the scales with Rit, but when I reassembled the knife, but blade isn't aligned correctly. It now sits against the liner opposite the lockbar as seen here...

Does anyone have any idea what I did wrong, and more importantly how to fix it????!!! Did I not install something incorrectly, or tighten the screws in the wrong order???

Thanks!

Looks like I wasn't the only one having that problem. I found THIS thread, and got it figured out. Looks like the Southard is just really particular about pivot tension!

Here's a few shots of the finished product....

Seriously this was THE BEST $1.58 I have ever spent. That's all the box of Rit dye cost. All total it took me just over an hour to do, problem included.

I'm not saying I wouldn't spend some money on new scales if they were lighter (in color) than the stock ones, but paying almost $100 to get new black ones vs. $2 and an hour of your time to make your brown scales black is just a no-brainer.

Thanks again for all your help guys!!!

I'm having the same problem. How did you fix it?

For me it was just a problem of pivot tension, as I suspect that is the deal with you. The pivot pin is double sided, meaning the screws on BOTH ends can be removed. You have to break the other side free then just adjust the tension until the blade lines up.

Here's a link that I found with a little more detail, but that's really all it is...

My Southard...rounded the clip (I need to work on the pocket end now) and added a cf scale and over travel. Installed a shorter lanyard tube as well to accommodate the thinner scale. The knife is more symmetrical now.

Maroon micarta with white liner. Great carry knife as the scale is smooth in and out of the pocket, but has grip when squeezed. Thanks Steve!

LSCF from ShepardCC. Really loving the knife since the new scale. I was iffy on the brown g-10

I decided I needed bronzed hardware to match the copper in the lscf. It came out pretty decent for just using my electric stovetop.
