Speed checks, "pass it down", proxies, please read.

Maybe being cranky is going around. I am very seldom, almost never, cranky, but I am today. I think I am going to attribute it to being made to feel as if I have done something wrong/bad/inappropriate by participating in the way that Nathan has always allowed up to this point.

Go for your 2nd / 3rd? UFK and that will make you feel better. See you around till then :p

For what it's worth, I don't think anyone has done anything wrong here. We're simply recognizing a limitation of the forum format and making an adjustment to reduce issues some folks are experiencing. Other folks may feel differently. And it's important to recognize their feelings too because their feelings are important. :D

Can I be an ass, please? I'm now cranky too because y'all made Dave cranky!

The cry-baby poopoos have already forced my hand to not proxy for anyone else and have also forced me not to pass down spots anymore. I truly appreciate CataD's generous action and deeds landing me that UFK when I was otherwise indisposed 2 Fridays back and if I should land a couple more UFKs on my own feet, I will offer one back to him at my cost with both PP fees and shipping on me! Other than that, why not for me to go for 40 x or 50 x CPKs if all is one the level and my $ is just as good as anyone else's!

Does anyone really want to deal with that chimp-with-a-machine-gun talents which I seem to be blessed with? There are a lot of great points here by Jo / Nathan which will absolutely be followed out of my utmost respect for this great couple but this machine-gun-chimp is gonna have a strong game-face :D

^^^^Mat, the proxies are fine, (As long as you have verified with the member you are Proxying for-he or she does indeed want the knife) the problem (as I understand it) is the posting and then passing it down (Speed Tests). I can see how this would cause confusion for New Members and especially NinJO! The new procedures should benefit all
Glad to see the changes:thumbsup:

Uhh, took a bit to catch up with all the comments.

I do agree with most of the comments about speed checks. I guess I've been guilty of this in the past few years, as I've done a couple/few; some of my successful attempts became speed checks because of scales/proxy requests that never answered/ friends (outside BF) that changed their mind - like the last EDC3 sale :(.. Anyways..

When I finally got my first CPK, a Light Chopper, some years ago, it was after several frustrating failed attempts and I was almost ready to give up :(... Those sales were savage as well (hell!) and numbers were a lot more limited! So, I do understand that some newer members are upset for not making it. But, I didn't start whining and yelling that the rules aren't fair. I counted to 10 and had a beer :). And kept trying. It took me a lot of practice to end up in the winning spots and I still make about half of them. Luckily for me, I usually can make the 3PM sales, so with 50% chances I still get most of my knives straight from CPK. Also, the fact that Nathan and Jo put out a lot more numbers (40) for most sales, helps a lot! I've also been part of almost all the pre-orders CPK Nathan did (regretting not getting in for the Comp. Chopper)!

I never asked for a proxy (so far) but, I'd like to think that, if I at some point will require one, I would still be allowed to ask for one. I do agree with Casinostocks Casinostocks , if proxies were to be eliminated completely, the prices on the secondary market for CPK would go up. Not long ago, someone offered a lot of $$ for someone to 'proxy' for him/her, I do hope y'all remember that! Not cool!

This being said, Nathan & Jo, if I caused any trouble, I apologize :(!

p.s.
1. I don't agree with ' If someone wants it bad enough...'. If that's so, I'm waiting to be offered a CPK D2 skinner and a CPK Integral Dagger!! I want them BAD! :D
2. Regarding the errors some members are getting... I got that once or twice, but I realized it was user error! Once I was trying to post (click on Post Reply) without actually writing something and the other was pressing refresh like a mad man. Maybe those members should review what they're doing...

Hi Nathan,
I respectfully disagree. I find the Friday sales a major pain and the complete opposite of fun. The fact that this thread is even necessary is another tick in the box of the Pre Sale format, in my opinion. I acknowledge that each approach has its pros & cons and that perhaps the short controlled burst of 40 knives at a time means that people get what they came for with less waiting... However, Friday sales also deny many people a knife at all. It also seems to me that untangling the sale takes Jo several days...

Thats my 2c. Thanks for listening.
Lawrie

If Nathan is willing to offer a particular model on Friday sales in batches, till he sees a slowdown in sales, I see no reason why anyone would complain. If you don't get it this Friday, then you will get it a few Fridays later. But if you want it this Friday...…..
Look, the CPK team wants to deliver a quality product and they want us to have fun. If NinJo says proxies are fine, then proxies are fine. I think this crowd has a far more refined sense of what the right thing to do is, and Nathan trusts us to regulate ourself. Lets move on!

^ now that’s the spirit in a much better and more positive direction

I think we're going to do our next Field Knife sale as a timed one minute sale rather than a specific quantity. I know one minute is short and I hate to rush people, but it should be enough time that everybody that makes an effort to be there should be able to get what they want without getting up into quantities that we can't manage here.

...this is probably a terrible idea, but we've talked it over here and we want to give it a try...

Sounds great!
I hope it doesn’t cause you undue burden.
I hope it doesn’t result in so many knives that it takes a month or more to fill the order before you guys can consider another sale.
Then we are going to see posts about how you don’t sell often enough.

I will miss the carnage.

Yup. Those are concerns. This is a one time thing.

Unfortunately I don't have time to read everything but I did read your original post when it went up.

If it has not already been proposed why not think about randomizing the post orders that will get the knife? You can announce it in the original listing so everyone can see where they fall after their post.

If you only have 10 then say you will accept posts 20-30, if you have 40 say you will accept posts 10-30 and 50-70, or something along those lines.

Totally fair system that cannot be gamed and it will force everyone to just post as quickly as they can while not over-burdening your team with a lot more orders than anticipated.

I recommend that Nathan also locks down that experimental sales thread after minutes into it to be done with the extra color commentary and all that jazz (just enough time for folks to make a sensible post as to what they want or whom they have proxied for). If anyone has a beef, they can come in here to discuss. #imjustsaying!

randomizing and something akin to a lottery has been discussed aplenty in the past but Nathan has always (correctly) favored FCFS (First Come First Serve). Just that people (yours truly included) have been having way too much fun which we have collectively agreed that needs to be toned down for the good of CPK as we go forward

Just to clarify, where you place has nothing to do with connection speeds (I consistently have garbage internet), but rather I see it as "luck of the refresh". It's a matter a being here at the right second and then crossing your fingers...nothing more.

Yeah, I can 100% confirm this.

I'm always on the road for work on Fridays. After making attempts on a few sales with whatever spotty connection I could get on my phone from the roadside, and not even getting anywhere close, I began searching for areas with good connection speeds in the areas I'm usually in.

Found an area I'm usually in at around 5pm that had amazing 4g (to me). 60Mb/s down, 20Mb/s up (faster than my 10Mb/s upload speeds at home!). Pretty decent ping times too. I think it may have contributed to decent placements in a couple of the 5pm preorders.

Deliberately changed things around to put me in the area at 3pm instead of 5pm, for the first sale of 40 x FK2s,... and still didn't get close.

The next sale of 40 x FK2s, I didn't bother changing things around to put me at the hotspot, but still decided to try with whatever crap phone connection I was getting at the location.

Tested the connection 2 minutes before 3pm. ~7Mb/s download, 1Mb/s upload. Somehow, I managed to be #10. Sheer luck of the refresh.

Sure it is....If you wanted one bad enough would you not try to be here to get one...or do you feel it's necessary to put the burden on someone else to do the work for you. Did you not make it a point to be here to compete for your first CPK?
While I continue to make attempts from the roadside due to work, there are folks whose jobs do not allow them the luxury of personal phones or internet. You can't be suggesting that these folks take the day off from work, just to make an attempt at a CPK sale, where they still might not get lucky enough. What then? Keep taking Fridays off for the next sale, until they DO score one?

I see a place for the proxies. Nathan simply brought the topic up, as it has gotten a little out of hand, but there is still a place for proxying. It doesn't have to be viewed as an all-or-nothing deal.
